Guest VR6newbie
Hey i was speaking to ECU boff a few months back and was tellin me that the VR6 on board detected faults in the engine and if serious would restrict the power of the engine thus reducing subsequent damage. What do u guys know about this? and am i gonna have this prob coz me carz bin misfiring coz of one of leads tracking? any help much appreciated.
acf8181 0
i doubt it...only cars i know of that do this are very new top end cars, and WRC cars!
FishWick 21
The VR6 does indeed have a 'limp' mode. It will retard the igntion and increase fuelling if it's not happy with the sensors' signals, or lack there of. This will happen if the cam position sensor dies and you will lose 30bhp.K[ Edited Thu Jun 10 2004, 09:23PM ]
VRmonster 1
and the only way to check if this has happened would be a vag-com? would it show this "limp" mode or just the cam sensor fault.
Jeff_VR6 0
Ah. My car must be running on *limp* mode then
FishWick 21
No VAG-COM won't tell you the ECU is in limp wristed mode. The cam sensor is a classic failure on the VR. When I bought my Corrado, I though it was mega slow compared to my BMW 325i, but a quick dyno at Stealth revealed the Cam sensor was out and it produced 172bhp! Gutted! He stuck a new sensor in and reset the ECU.....then we got 200 brake on the nail with 193lb/ft. The engine was standard then.If you feel your VR is somewhat lacking, check it on VAG-COM for a dead cam sensor because as I say, the limp mode loses you 30 ponies!!That's the main sensor that triggers limp mode. Dead MAFs and throttle sensors can also load the safe map.Believe me, you *will* know when limp mode is loaded because the car will be gutless and you'll get about 3mpg!The American cars got a warning on the dash telling them the ECU has found a fault and loaded Limpy get home mode. We never got that. Cheers VW.[ Edited Fri Jun 11 2004, 06:33PM ]
