The VR6 is dead - long live the R32!

undoubtedly the VR6 (h) is an awesome little car in its own right and will be for years to come i am sure......but i thought that about my 1978 mk1 gti (h) ....and the 1983 mk1 gti (h) ..and the mk1 cabriolet gti (h) .....and my Golf Rallye (h) .... its just you cant keep them all !!!!!! i think owning these vehicles from one of the best marketed brands with build quality and affordably priced cars in the world is the appeal for me, i love (l) all VW`s not just the one i have at the minute!! AMEN

but in 'my opion' this car is not for speed.

You can not expect the VR6 a 10 year+ car to keep up with

the cars they are producing in todays standards.

Even by throwing money by putting remaps and chargers

only shorten the life of ya VR and they still struggle

if ya wanna burn off from the traffic lights.

dont invest in a VR6 and if you think

by spending on extras will help, dont be fooled as the

it spends more time in the garage.

You might as well go and get a new one with a warrenty

there are some good deals out there on cars that have

Have to disagree (I know you thought some people may disagree). My car beats most modern cars off the line. Easily keeps up with Civic Type R's (pulled away from one who was trying behind me), mk 5 GTI's.

I do however agree with you that my VR (including the mark4 R32, Civic Type R's etc) is not the fastest car out there...it maybe faster than most, but up against the likes of good BMW's and Subarus its no contest.

I do like the look of the VR...it still looks modern. If you look at most cars 10 years old they look their age. A well looked after mk3 certainly doesn't...I emphasise 'well looked after'. It also looks stylish in my opinion (if its been subtly lowered). Its also exclusive...even being nearly 10 years old... I only see about one or two mk3 Vr's a week and I live and travel through busy towns/cities. My car only has minor mods and has better power to weight ratio than most modern cars. I'm sure the R32 is far far smoother to drive but not a huge amount faster (6.6 secs)..my lightly modded one isn't far off.

I would however buy a mk4 R32 if I had £13k to spend on one...not for their speed, as already mentioned they aren't much faster than a lightly modded mk3 VR. But I would buy one because it is very nice looking and very exclusive. I love the pearl blue colour it comes in. It will certainly be my next car, but I'm very happy keeping my mk3 for the time being. My dream car would be a twin turboed R32... 550bhp :)

Not many cars are modern looking and stylish after 10 years

like our Mk3's (h) even thou I put a SWG body kit on mine

just to give it the lovely curvey shape it deserves.

But living just on outskirts of London / Essex side.

I see hundreds of Mk3's.

Some are so chav'd up its :$ cringe time.

Agree with you on the Mk4 R32 looks solid and sound (h)

Blimey - it seems that a few people get a little upset if anyone dares to say anything negative about the precious VR. I only started this thread to highlight that for the time being the Mk5 R32 lies at the top of the (non-modified)Golf tree - in 10 years time I'm sure it will be where the VR6 is now. I also am going to keep my VR & would probably trade in the R32 for something new as & when the time is right, but the VR has so much character it will stay until it can go no longer, having said that, the R32 does make such a sweet noise.....

I love my VR and in terms of bang for buck, it really is a good buy. However, mines 10 years old now, and I am considering getting a MK4 r32, my mate had one and I loved it!!!! Go for a blast in an R32, and then get straight into your VR, then you will realise what all the fuss is about!!!!!

Also all this "a lightly modded VR would keep up" stuff is all very well until you get to a corner or you come across a lightly modded R32, and then its see ya!!! I am not knocking the VR (I've still got one) but I think its time to move on!!!!

To be honest i don't think the R32 in std form it that quick, I've been in acouple and they've not really excited me, but the R32 with a S/C stage 2 or a HPA turbo now that's a different beast all together.

The std R32, get it up to 4K and there is a slight engine note change and a small surge in power as the inlet & exhaust opens up, that that's about it, where as with the s/c at 4k the charger just about at full boost and OMP hold on tight.

Yep, supercharge an R32 and you've got a seriously quick point-to-point machine, like a Scooby STi or Evo VIII except with better looks, a decent interior and German pedigree.

Rest assured that as soon as second-hand prices come down a bit, we'll start to see more modded 32s out there.

I'm not sure where VW are at with the R36. Has anything been announced?

The one I'm waiting for is the Scirocco coupe (which will be available with the 3.2 engine or MAYBE the 3.6)
