Right Guys n Girls i find myself in a dilemma. I have recently had to break my unreliable BMW e36 325 and wish to return back to VW in the form of a VR6. Im after a black one either 3 door or 5 door with leather. Now i know that the HIGHLINE was the only VR to come a standard with leather, a/c and heated seats and there are the odd couple that also had it. But i cant find one. However i have seen one on the trader recently that has everything i want, apart from being black in colour...its more of a grey. Do you think i should get that one, or hold out a bit longer. Bearing in mind i have no car @ the moment.

N/B- i really only have 2k :(

Thanks in advance Jk.

hmm highlines in decent nick tend to be a bit pricier than 2k imo.

if i were you and car-less, i'd bite the bullet and go for it. if you can live with the colour - after all it's you that has to look at it on the drive for the next however long!

i almost went for a grey one (i was after silver) but got lucky at the eleventh hour when a silver came up within budget.

Go for the grey one, they are really nice!

I was in the same sort of situation as you when I got my VR 3 years ago, my MK2 head gasket had just blown (again) and I needed a car fast, really wanted a black one or a mulberry highline, but they were very expensive at the time and the only cheap ones were not well looked after!

I ended up with the pearl dragon green (although I never liked the green before then) but I wouldnt change the car now for the world! It has been a gr8 car ever since!!!And the colour is really nice when polished! Best to get a decent VR in a different colour than a nice looking one in bad condition, you can always change the interior for leather at a later date!

This is the one i was thinking about only 95k. Its bit of a trek for me from Plymouth and the bloke said he's not going to shift on the price...what do you people think?

I was in the same situation a couple of months ago, wanted a black Highline or std VR with all the extras.

I ended up with a black standard VR with no extras!!..not even A/C(but it's got a sunroof)...i picked it up for £2500(92k, fsh) and i don't regret it one bit as i had money left over to sort the suspension , induction kit etc.

For me it's the engine that makes the car, you'll soon forget about not having leather.

imo i wouldnt settle for a car i didnt want! vr`s are always coming up for sale, i hunted everywhere for mine as i wanted a mulberry highline in 5 door and manual! i saw about 30 come and go till i found the right one! sadly mine will be for sale shortly (it will be more than 2k though!) to make way for an R32, again my search for the "right" car in the right spec is ongoing at the minute, with pearl blue, full black konig leather and 5 doors in the requirements, i am gradually narrowing my search but so many have got grey interiors! eeerrrghh! or dealers are trying to charge stupid money! some i have seen are only 5k less than the new 32!! just be patient and you will find one, even if it needs a bit of TLC or body work as long as the engines fine and the specs right, the cosmetics can be sorted quite cheaply in my experience, failing that your just gonna have to save some more pennies up my friend, it will be worth it in the long run as you dont want to mod a car you arent 100% sure about!

I had a VR in Atlas grey. It's actually quite a rare colour and makes a change from the usual black & silver. Atlas grey really suits the mk3 IMO.

Definitely go for one with air con. No question. The car above didn't have air con, and I spent three years kicking myself for not getting one with this option.

As for heated leather, don't worry too much about it because you can always retro-fit leather seats later on if you want to. They come up on eBay all the time and are really easy to fit.

Yeah, Highlines are the creme de la creme, but £2000 will only buy you a tatty or very high mileage one. If I had a choice of a ropey Highline, or a nice, well treated "normal" VR6 (with aircon!), I know which I would go for.

You speak sense, i have resound myself to the fact that a highline is not going to happen, so like you said, get a VR with AIRCON and the rest can be added later. Thanks for all the advice people ;)

£2k is limiting you to an older higher mileage VR mate or poorly looked after one, Highline or normal one. Personally (if possible) I would wait a few more weeks until you have another grand to put towards the car. You'll regret it otherwise. £3k will be a much more realistic price to get a good mileage VR with FSH ..although even with the right money the search always takes a long time finding a good one. Good luck in your search mate.

Def worth the wait IMO. I was absolutely desperate to get a VR and had joined this site and everything, but ended up searching for months in the end, til i found what i really wanted and i'm so glad i was patient. Trust me mate, you will be glad if you wait for the 'right' one ;-)

Gd luck either way

Patients os the key, i looked at several too, ended up going back to the first one, which had not sold cos of its price, but by comparison to the others it was mint! There are a lot of dog rough VR6 on the market. Look for ones that have a well looked after exterior and interior and you wont go far wrong, signs of rust and dents and stuff are all signs of abuse and neglect. Whats under the bonnet will be in keeping with the rest of the car.

My one regret with my VR is the lack of aircon. Everything else with it is spot on, and you don't see many in silver which are in decent nick these days.

My budget was 2k. I got mine for £1750 after some hard haggling - but then had to spend just over £1k on it, so it all evens out in the end - matth76 is right!
