duncs 0
hi folksmy VR6 has done 10k miles since its last service (in Jan) and the OEL dash display is coming up. two questions :-a) should i get it serviced pronto, or can i get away with it for another 5k miles just by adding a few litres of syntha silver and crossing the old fingers? chains never been done. good precautionary move to get them done at the next service, or leave alone?any pointers much appreciated - ta.duncs
thegoth 5
Hi Duncs,1) The OEL display indicates that only an oil change is due. Best get it done. Adding oil will only work if it has used some. Most people here would have changed their oil twice in 15K miles.2) Where do you intend to get it serviced? The VW stealer price for replacing the chains is over £1K! And most garages wouldn't know where to start.Common consensus around here is to wait until they are noisy (there is a WAV file in the new FAQ section), but when I had mine done at 160K miles they tensioners where completely shot but the engine was running quietly. I can only imagine it had been driven trhough the rattly stage before I bought it. How long have you had the car?Kilokila, on here, is in your neck of the woods ( North Stoke), is cheap (£500 inc clutch) and does a first rate job having done quite a few before, including mine. PM him.TG
duncs 0
brilliant - what a great reply, thanks for that!i'll get it serviced at vw stealer but if chains will cost that much, then eek, rethink time!my engine's quite tappety, i'll listen to the .wav and hope it's nothing similar!i bought bugs in jan this year, with 99k miles, now showing 111k. had quite a lot of work done after purchase but didn't touch the chains, vw stealer advised they were ok.cheersduncs
B6MFD 0
iv had the oil changed twice since i got my vr with 86k on the clock, now on 96k, had the chains done too coz got the dreaded rattles. not a cheap or quick thing to have sorted but my mechanic baught a vr6 knowing the chains had slipped and gave up on it coz it was taking to long to sort so figured it made sense to do it as i wanted to keep it. thegoth 5
Hi again,Sorry, the link to the WAV is actually in a premium member guide on changing timing chains, not the FAQ. And it's a WMA not a WAV!TG
