Smoked by a mini

pulled up at the lights next to a new mini and had the usual drag race off the lights and i hate to say it left me standing, shit happens i suppose, i have also been smoked by a ford couger not sure what engine and also a pug 206 gave me a run for my money.

I don't really care and i'm happy to admit that VR's aren't the fastest cars on the road and it would appear that there are alot modern hot hatches that have alot more power, a mate of mine has just bought a clio 197, i'm avoiding him.

Just wondered what your most surprising defeat in your VR's have been?

he may beat you to 60 but you should match him to 100 and then pull in front and have it top end speeds

is yours standard?

a cooper s gave me no trouble at all the fastest cougar is 8.1 sec 0-60 (2.5 v6)

cooper s is 165 bhp

cooper s works is 200 ish

and cooper s works + is 210 iirc

a stock cooper s is slower than a stock vr but itl be close

I've had my Vr for nearly 2 years and nobodys really given it the large from the lights - I cant remember being beaten by anything to be honest but I havent had anything that powerful try

my VR is standard apart from K&N air filter. the mini was a cooper s it didn't completly leave me standing but it did win, it must have been one of the more powerful models.

The ford couger completly left me standing, it was far quicker than the vr, i can only imagine given the info above that it had been given a blower or something.

Do any of you guys know anything about putting a mk 4 12v head gasket on a mk3 to increase the compression ratio????

What gains can be expected from this mod???

A Cooper S Works would be a more equal match to a lightly modded VR. I have easily beaten Cooper S's and Clio Sport (the one with the two exhausts at the back) I had a Civic Type R on my tail a few weeks back and it did stick with me but I did start pulling away after a few seconds. I know he didn't let off the power because at the next round about he tried to race again. My own car has similar performance to a mate's S3 at work. S3 has 0-60 of approx 6.8 secs. Although I far prefer the sound of mine compared to his 1.8t.

Is your Vr an OBD1 or OBD2..how old is it? Could make a bit of a difference as the earlier VR had 174bhp. Whereas the later OBD2 VR has around 185bhp if not a bit more. Maybe worth putting your car on the rolling road some time. Every car is different. Could be that your timing is slightly out which a rolling road session at Stealth will show up. Your car should pull hard relentlessly from 2.5k revs in any gear.

A lightly modded VR should easily match if not beat many modern day hot hatches.

u must ave sumfin wrong wiv ur vr my friend,my vr is near standard & as dun well against most fings ive raced,played wiv a y reg wrx sti scooby last nite,dun me on the lights but frm around 90 to 140 i pulled about 2 cars lenght on him!week b4 i left 2 106 gti's & a r5 turbo all at the same time,but then i drive mine like i stole so it,all depends on the driver at the end of the day!

My VR is a obd2 and its on a p plate. It does move don't get me wrong and it is really clean and well looked after, it has regular oil changes and i only use super unleaded. I don't think there is any thing wrong with the ignition timing as she appears to be running perfectly, no smoking ect.....

To be honest i've had it for 2 years and it has been trouble free motoring apart from a coked up throttle body which was soon rectified. I think that i'm gonna get it rolling road tested as you suggested just to be on the safe side.

I was speaking to a friend of mine and he told me that they can now re-map the ecu with out changing chips ect.. have any of you had experience of this ?? What were the results like ??

Integra TypeR chewed my a*se, I was needing to change gear, but he just kept on revving..each gear change he pulled away. It was modded, and I could have climbed inside the exhaust!! Nearly deafened me while he was alongside. Thing is, as we came to traffic (on dual carriageway) I lifted off, he just carved through at 120+ like an idiot...nearly took out some poor guy who panicked and pulled over as he raced up the inside.

Blitzed MR2 turbo to 60 from lights though, no good at low revs it seems, fists full of torque do it for me anytime

Thats the thing, it aint all bout the car! Some slick gear changes can make all the difference and also if you're putting the other guy/gal under pressure, there is always a chance of a missed gear or somethin 8o|

Stealth's full custom remap involves keeping the current ECU but 're-chipping' it to allow it to be mapped. Then it can be mapped anytime in the future as well when you get more mods etc. Costs the same as an off the shelf chip but obviously far more superior as its a full remap. However a chip or remap is pointless on an OBD2 vr unless it already has big mods such as cams or more. A rolling road will be a good idea as it will not only show you your power and torque but highlight any flat spots in your rev range.

You should not really have trouble with a standard cooper S, 0-60 it may have you, but after that you should pull past with ease.

My friend has 240bhp minispeed cooper S, it eats most things for brekfast from a good roll on - i have witnessed it beating a 230bhp VR (chip, filter, exhaust, bored to 3.1), and an escort cossie are its main achievements. I liked the car so much that I had the money sat on the side to sell my VR and get a 225bhp cooper S. However, the cars are not all they are cracked up to be... An old chrysler pig iron engine, renault gearbox, ford body panels... a bit of a mix and matched show really, and dont take hard driving and mileage too well. I still love the look of them and they are super cool, but not really sure about them for a long run car.

i fink minis are gay! fine if you hair dress or do bluewater everyday but i wouldnt care if they were twice as fast as my VR6 i wouldnt give you a tenner for one! thats just my opinion though so dont shoot me! there a far better cars than that that can be bought for far less money that would anhialate a mini of any sort, any of the 80s or 90s 911 porkers for a start, anything from 5-20 grand for an older porsche and it will still be quicker and 100% a better car imo, even with a bit of rust

I still love minis with a passion...old school though, modern ones are a bit biz for my taste.

As for races, bit of a pussy myself so don't go daft, I got owned by a ctr but to my defense we were doing 100 through rush hour traffic and I decided to bow out before someone lost a bollock whilst he steamed over into the slow lane, nearly wiped out a bunch of slip roaders just to get past. I won the moral battle and I was in 5th all the way. Also had a good battle with a new gti, he pulled in and rapped on at the lights about how cool he thought my car was. How right he was. Pretty quick them new gtis.
