18s for my vr. caliper clearance.

Recommended Posts

hi all. i'm a newbie. for 2 weeks i have now been the proud owner of my new '97 golf vr6 black leather on black. always wanted one since they came out new. being a mechanic to trade as soon as it was sittin in ma drive i started ordering parts. eibach springs badgeless grill little eybrow thingys and a set of 18" inovit dtm gloss black wheels. 5x100 et40. firstly they took what seemed to be forever in turning up. but they were worth the wait or so i thought opened them straight away car on a jack woohoo new wheels. then to my horror when i tryed to put them on the car the front brake calipers are hitting the back of the wheel spokes and the rear wheelbearing dust caps stop the centre caps fitting the back wheels. aaaaahhhhhh... spacers..... nope. to get the wheel to clear the caliper requires a 10mm spacer and with it on, the 8" wide wheel then hits the arch. sh*t.

i can get something simillar but the offset is 35mm the original offset on the car is et43 does anyone out there have a 35mm offset on their vr. and how does it drive. i'm worried that it'll be all over the road. for any help on this would be so gratefull. thanks again. Brian.

et 35 is what most golfs run, tbh i would have only gone to 17`s on a mk3 due to clearance probs on the front and back, i have 8x17`s on mine with a big drop and it has clearance, just! the bigger 288 brakes on later vr`s do mean wheel choice has to be carefull unlees your rolling arches as craggsy has said, this might be the way to go for you now you have the rims in hand! but they do sound like they are the wrong ofset if the grease caps are not fitting right? the front caliper cna be solved with a spacer but its gonna get a bit wide!!
