I'm looking to buy a VR6 and have just found a 98 R plate with a genuine 30k on it, backed up by full VAG history. It is a complete minter, looks like new. It's a a black auto 3dr, has full beige leather, air con, sunroof, cd etc all the usual spec & its advertised at £5495.00. Whar are peoples opinions?

PS hope i posted in the right section (im new) lol.

Here it is:

Hi ya

Welcome aboard.

In my opinion its to much money for that specific car just to put it in to some sort of context I just sold my VR6 show car - Seen here http://www.swdubs.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2515 For under 5000 with the Private plate and I thought I got a good price for it with how the VR6 Market is.

At the end of the day if you really wantand like the car you'll pay what ever for it but my advise is have a good look at whats out there. The VR6 Market is certainly a buyers market at the moment as there are plenty about

Thanks for your reply. I don't know how much the VR I saw is worth but I did get the impression that if anything it was slightly overpriced. I havn't seen any others with mileage that low however. Your car looked stunning by the way, I think it's hard to compare the two though due to yours being modified and also having over 114k on the clock...

Cheers, Tom

Don't be too sucked in by the milage. On VRs is seems to matter less on how far they've been and more on how they got there. A number of low milers have come to light which run like dogs because they've only be used for short journeys and never got hot enough for the oil to do all that it could.

Thanks for your replies everyone! It seems like nobody is sold on this particular VR then..? There is no way to really tell if it's just been used for short journeys is there? If it runs and drives sweet would you go for it?

Thanks again, Tom

To be honest I would not go for it.

You can get alot more for alot less :-)

And it's automatic :-(

Far to many new commers to the VR6 want low mileage examples which are not really all they are cracked up to be. Better to have one with alot more miles on !

Look for one that has around 70,000 or so on these are plentliful, cheaper and worth what you pay for it.

Mark.

Thanks Mark, I have been looking at lots of VR6's, some with 100k plus miles on. I just happened to see this one at the garage when my old man bought a new car so thought I would run it by everyone - Glad I did too because everyone seems to be against the idea! lol

Seems like a lot for that car regarding of the mileage, i would keep looking around mate like i have been and you will be able to pick up a car with a higher mileage, but like said has hopefully been well looked after and run in properly.

Well i reckon you've probably got the message by now, that milage aint the be all and end all! Don't get me wrong, low milage is a plus point, but more important is regular servicing etc. Personally i would keep looking for a cheaper example from a private seller. Another bit of advice (at the risk of sounding biased!) is to keep an eye on cars for sale on this site, as they are more likely to have been looked after properly.

Cheers everyone, some valid points raised! I might go and test drive it and see what its like, i wanna drive an auto and a manual to compare so might aswell plus the more experience i have with them the better surely.. Thanks for all your comments

Agree with all above comments. Very low mileage cars can have a lot more problems with the engine. There have been a few cases of this.

When it says it has a full service history has it been done every 12 months and NOT every 10k miles? It should be done which ever comes sooner and in this case every 12 months. Also a main dealer service history isn't always the best thing. A far better full service history would be one done by a specialist. I (and quite a few other members) have had problems with main dealers..plus they quite often use young trainees to do the servicing. I had a full service by Caffyns when I first got mine and they were utterly useless and neglected to tighten up every single one of my six spark plugs. They also failed to notice a fault light on the dashboard of my gf's brand new polo.

However having said all that a full service history is a must. I wouldn't get an auto though ...unless you specifically want it. You will regret it...I assure you. My friend just bought a Japanese sports coupe (200sx) but got an auto...sure enough he got it for a good price... but now wants to sell it and get a manual. I would suggest getting a vr6 with at least 60-70k miles.

Thanks for that info matt, nice one. I don't specifically want an auto and to be honest i was against it initially, im just at that stage where i want a new car, i need to control myself, wait for the right one and not compromise! It seems that everyone including yourself recommends getting one with 60-70k on, also at that milage they will be cheaper, il keep my eyes peeled for one! Thanks again

Hi Tom,

By reading your post, you may have prompted me to sell my car. Not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing.

If you see my post reply in 'How long have you had you VR?' (or as bottom of this post), you can see a bit of detail about it.

Anyway, I have not really been using as much as I'd like to and sadly I have been thinking of selling it, as we have a Freelander as an everyday family car.

I would return it pretty much to standard (including the Highline BBS Solitude wheels), as I still have all the bits including the wooden gearknob. The only thing that would not be standard would be the suspension (well you wouldn't want the standard suspension back on - looks and drives like a Freelander - well I should know this). The Mk4 side repeaters would stay on as I have put Mk4 wiring/bulbs onto accommodate them. Also the back box is aftermarket. It also has an after market induction kit (also have standard airbox). I would also leave the crystal fogs/indicators on it (these are not in the photos). I do have the standard fogs/indicators though.

I would also change the private plate back to 'P' reg.

It has 6 months MOT left on and sailed through the last MOT, with even the MOT guy commenting that it was a good car for its age.

It is a lovely car, hence why I have had it over 4 years.

Being the 'Highline' model, it has all the toys (air con & sunroof) and purple leather (matches paintwork) interior with heated seats.

Will not be looking at internet now until Friday 15th September.

Cheers, Jon ;)

Quote 'How long have you had you VR?'

Just over 4 years (May 2002).

Bought it totally standard with 45,000 miles, for £8,000 - going price then for a good Highline.

Just clocked 65,000 miles, but do not really use it that much - 2nd car.
