So, i thought id better make sure the car is safe (being a h reg 1.3 escort) so i put the handbrake on extra tight, in gear and put the wheels against the kerb. Good stuff. Anyway, came out, got in the car, just about to start it and the HONDA CIVIC that was parked in front of me started rolling backwards, towards the main road! (No occupants) I said to the missis "is that car rolling back?" She said, "dont be silly!" The next thing we know the CIVIC has rolled across a busy main road, and hit a car @ the opposite junction! PMSL! Im just sat there in stitches! Anyway, a car travelling along the main road stops gets out and realises theres no driver, even funnier, then the chinese dude runs out and cant believe what has happened. Really made me laugh, you had to be there to appreciate the humour. but dam lucky that car @ the junction was there else it would of gone through a school shop! LMFAO!!! purple highline monster 0 Posted September 12, 2006 Report Share Posted September 12, 2006 my Rallye golf rolled away once! off the inlaws drive and down the road onto a house 3 doors away front lawn! i was shocked when i looked out and couldnt see my car!!!! then relieved when i saw it down the road and even more relieved it had missed 2 parked cars and handnt been damaged at all when it bumped up the kerb!! lucky it rolled backwards or the kerb would have ripped the front bumper off and probably mullered the steering rack too!! i put down to brakes cooling off, its probably the only time i never left it in gear so i was lucky! VR6Lee 1 Posted September 12, 2006 Report Share Posted September 12, 2006 LOL Brings back GOOD memories DOH!Just got back off holiday, the ex-wife decides to unpack, we are all hungry so I nip out, I take the company car a Peugeot 405 Estate 1.9 turbo to the chippie with my eldest son who was 6 at the time (10 years ago) :S I park the car up beside the chippie on a slight slop.Jump out and I tell Billy, 'I wont be long you can see me out the side window'.While waiting for my order to be dished up,someone in the chippie shouts whos car is rolling down the slop.FUCK, MINE, FUCK, MY SON, BILLYI runout the chippie to watch the car roll down & up a drive way on to the verge & into the lamp post cracking the bumper and pushing the old grey lamp post to a slight angle +o( 'BILLY' I was shaking when I got to the car.But Billy was in the driving seat smiling at me *-) He got out of his back seat into the driver seat and some how the handbrake dropped??Still dont know how he done it *-) :$ but now for the first time, I think It my of been my fault.....I did'nt pull it up all the way? :$ :$ Link to post Share on other sites
guppers 0 Posted September 12, 2006 Report Share Posted September 12, 2006 my vr has done that twice. parked up after some cainage and applied handbrake. all hunkydory. about 10 minutes later when the brakes have cooled down off it went down the road. thank christ i was there at the time and after a frantic moment with my remote got in and stopped it. easy done. Drove about 6 miles to the supermarket and back and reversed up the drive, applied the handbrake and put it in gear. Unpacked the car and about 10-15 minutes later heard a crunch, looking out the window saw a car in the garden jammed up against the hedge and tree. Thought some idiot had crashed through the garden then realised it was our VR6!Got to the car and it was locked, the handbrake was still on and it was still in gear. Couldn't move it 'cos it was wedged against the tree so had to have a friend winch it out with their Landy.Just had it in the body shop for the last week to repair front wing, door and rear wing which suffered serious scuff marks and dinges. Get the bill tomorrow so something to look forward to there!The handbrake had been adjusted by the garage a couple of weeks before the incident and they have re-checked everything whilst it was in for the body work. Everything is ok and they are baffled as to why it happened.Any ideas out there? Link to post Share on other sites
melinamotor 0 Posted November 8, 2006 Report Share Posted November 8, 2006 was it a type r?its a known fault with them the rear brakes are sensitive to heat and expand to much then contract after the handbrake is on allowing it to loosen offHe he, it can happen on any make of car especially when they have rear disc brakes.As already stated the discs contract as they cool and a lightly engaged handbrake will slip.One tip is to apply the footbrake whilst engaging the handbrake to let the servo apply the clamping force needed.I have always put the car in gear if parked on an incline, you just need to make sure the correct gear is selected depending on whether the car is facing downhill (reverse) or uphill (first).
