Since replacing my old RS8's i have decided that i really liked them. They came on the car when i bought it and tbh they were in a shocking state - badly curbed, the laquer had peeled off and corrosion had got to them. They really let the look of the car down.

So being a tight Northener and not wanting to spend much cash, i decided to go about refurbishing them myself.

Got a pre-polishing kit from ebay (£17) as well as a final polishing kit (£20), along with some paint stripper to remove the old laquer.

All i used was an Electric Drill combined with a bit of graft.

Well heres the finished result prior to me laquering them :)

Not a 'perfect' mirror finsih but not far off!

Plus, saved myself probably £120 minimum if i had got them done professionaly....

Shame i didnt take piccies of them before, but trust me, they were a mess!

I wouldnt laquer them' date=' it'll dull the finish

Already have done and it hasnt affected the finish at all - still mirrored....probably has something to do with me leaving them indoors to warm up prior and then laquering them indoors too....Missus wasnt too pleased at the smell though :$

really? Thats a result... I always thought it did' date=' maybe it happens over time... I always leave mine unlaquered anyway as it's easier to polish out any kerb marks or scuffs that inevitably happen

I would love to leave them alone but i live at the seaside and the air is full of salt..it would only take a matter of weeks for the salt to corrode the Wheels.I left them outside un-coated for a couple of nights and they were tarnished after just that amount of time..

Not clever!

  • 3 weeks later...

How long did it take per wheel??

I'm gonna be having a go at some TT comps and was wondering how much time to put aside - there's just little kerbing no laquer lift or scratches...

Ooo,difficult to say as i did it on and off over 2-3 weeks.

If you've just got kirbing then probably allow 2 hours per wheel. If it's quite deep then use a flap wheel, say 60 grit, that will dig fairly deep. Then some heavy grit polishing paste to take the rough finish to a pre-polishing finish. Then a final polish.

Sounds long winded but it aint too bad :-)
