ok, thanks to some fettling the old girl is back up to standard bhp but torque is still way down at 140 lb/ft.

she is '96 obd2 with ram air and de-cat pipe, other than that totally standard.

pre above mods she was only pushing 163bhp but now has a healty 174bhp. Torque hasn't increased 1 iota though, so i have a couple of questions:

1. what is torque?

2. what elements make up the torque equation? i.e what can i focus on/ influence

3. where / why is she down so much on the standard figure?

all help muchly appreciated folks!

A standard VR6 should make 177lb-ft of torque. And OBD2 VRs should definitely make more than 163BHP as standard.

Some mods (such as lairy cams) will reduce torque in favour of top end power, but a ramair filter and de-cat shouldn't do this.

The first thing I'd try is giving it a damn good service - new spark plugs, new ignition leads, new fuel filter as well as the obligatory oil/filter change.

What sort of mileage has she done?

I would take it to a VR6 specialist - either Stealth (in the midlands) or The Phirm (in the south east) - both are the best vr specialists in the country and well worth a phone call or even better a visit (far cheaper than a main dealer and far far more experienced). Stealth would be able to put it on their rolling road (£50 a session) and diagnose if anything is wrong in your timing or fuelling. Something is definitely wrong with your car. A standard OBD2 should make 185bhp on average... 174 is down on what it should be... with a decat and air filter you should be making close to or above 190bhp and around 180 lbs/ft torque. Stealth or The phirm should be able to help you and save you wasting a lot of time and money. Good luck mate...let us know how you get on.

i always thought bhp is how hard the engine can work or how much work can be done, and torque is like how much force (pulling power) it creates whilst workin this hard....

so for example, lets say an obd2 creates 190bhp @ 6200rpm.

according to the equation, if you re-arrange it:

torque = 190 x 5252 / 6200

= 160.9 lbft

thats probably not the max torque output of the engine, but thats around how much torque it will create at 6200 with 190bhp...

standard vr's tend to make peak torque at about 4200rpm if im not mistaken??

so at around 4200rpm, engine aint gona be working at its hardest, so lets say same engine produces around 150bhp @ 4200rpm...

torque = 150 x 5252 / 4200

= 187.5 lbft which sounds about right for an obd2
