MarkGolf 6
Ok, I FINALLY pulled my finger out my arse and am starting to pull the engine out of my VR!Well, took alot apart today and found alot of 'TOFFEE' in the engine... guessing water from the coolant system has got in as it does, and the fact i have a hole in the bottom end, probably contributed to it aswell... can anyone explain more? First thoughts were that the head gasket had gone, but alot of people have said it's more than likely that it hasn't... Also I noticed the gasket in between intake manifold is slightly rusty!well, on these pics below... I'd like to know out of interest what these bits are;I found this behind the rad next to the fan motor area.. any ideas what it is for? This some sort of vacuum which lead to the TB.. Whats it do?Lastly, i know this is a general VW thing, but I always wondered what it was... any ideas?I got alot to teach myself alot about the VR, I'm finding its got a few things which I haven't come across before when compared to ya normal engine...Thanks for all help in advance! VRmonster 1
i hope your going to keep the pics coming as im going to be ripping an engine out soon, so would like something to refer after your experience. ie: your problems, guidelines, and your way of doing it.The last picture would be the carbon canister, i believe it is attatched to the fuel lines, and takes away noxius fumes from the petrol, so while pressurised they dont seep into the block. maybe not a good description, but can be removed. just leave the clear pipe to vent into the air, and block the other one off.also, all i can say about the vaccum to the TB, is that the grey thing is a solenoid, ha ha. (sorry)sorry i cant help with the others. Hope this helps tho. and keep up the pics. lol
MarkGolf 6
Ah ok, cool! Never thought that most VW's had teh carbon cannister thing, even my 1.4 does..Will keep pics up!Gonna be a misson. got my sticky labels ready and bags to put nuts n bolts in! Already ripped my arms to shreads to!
VRmonster 1
sounds good so far, at least you will know where the bolts go, even if you forget what part goes with em, lol . im very willing to throw some ideas at you when you hit problems, cos im going to be going through it all myself soon, and im gonna need all the help i can get. ha ha. let me in on any odd tools you need too. lol. Pittuf 0
I'm gonna be doing the same with my Fiesta RS1800 very soon, so this will be of no help to me at all, lol
binliner 0
The vacuum in the third picture comes from the carbon canister doesnt it? I think that thing with the blue connector on is a vent that just opens to release filtered air from the carbon canister into the inlet manifold
MarkGolf 6
Cool!I've always wanted to get my hands dirty with pulling an engine out and reinstalling it, but never ever thought the first engine I do it to would be a VR! Shudda been a Nova engine or something! talk about learning the hard way...Im about to get up and continue work on it with the cam... So far I've not needed anything special.. Im going to undo the driveshafts now which I KNOOWW is going to be a cnut! I think once they are off I'm laughing, I'll go and order the engine hoist for hire and then pull the lump out with G/B attached.. wudda been easier if I left the subframe in, but it has to stay with the car..cheers for help. anyone got idea what that lose plug is? kilokilla 0
right well yes they are right it is carbon cannister in 3rd picture but it also works as a breather for petrol tank and if removed causes big build up of pressure in petrol tank my current vr6 didnt have 1 when i bought it and when i opened petrol cap to fill up it would release excessive amounts ov built up air so i would say dont remove it as you risk blowing up your petrol tank oh also i have fitted a carbon cannister to my car now so i know for sure this was problem as i get no build up ov air in tank anymore
MarkGolf 6
Can I not just remove the filler cap?As it looks, i don't need to remove the clear pipe, and guessing thats the fuel one..I already have one in my 1400, but surely if I leave teh petrol filler open, that'll be ok? I also need to drain the tank as I got near a full tank in there!(another post)
kilokilla 0
lol thats what i did until i got a replacement carbon cannister only thing you have to remember is petrol evaporates when it mixes with air so your fuel will go down a little quicker
binliner 0
if you remove the carbon canister just leave the clear pipe open to vent the fumes from the petrol tank and block the black one off
kilokilla 0
sounds a bit dangerous to me bin you only need a spark in engine bay then and fumes are gonna explode but i can see how what your saying would work.also the carbon cannister im led to believe as some affect on the way the cat works which is why all catted cars are fitted with them although im not positive on this and am sure i will be put right if wrong. binliner 0
My clear pipe vents out down the hole where the cc used to be, not in the engine bay... I took advice from Vince before doing it. As far as Im aware the cc is only actually necessary for US emissions laws, Ive been running mine for about 9 months without it with no problems at all
kilokilla 0
wish i had that information before i spent a month trying to locate 1 the previous owner had connected the black hose to the clear 1 and i didnt know this option was available so i spent ages trying to locate 1 from a breaker but glad i know now cos i just bought a mk2 off ov ebay and it comes with all vr6 bits for a conversion so its definately handy to know as im sure its not gonna have a cannister with it he he.nice 1 bin. MarkGolf 6
Ok, well some pics from today's action!Basically got it all loose and its just resting tehre now.. Gettig the hoist tomorrow, and the engine will be FREE!!As it sits nowWhat EXACTLY is this..Do I need it, i wanna replace the cureent breather pipe with one of those small piper-x breather filters... i wanna dump this to, but can I?Random shotTrampy meTHE HOLE!!Big messRandom bits!My beasty!! Still going ok for 102kcar shotWas still light when I finished playing on the corrado, so thought I'd give my leather a clean..Tomorrow is hoisting day, so by tomoz night I shud be over and done with the corrado! I'm waiting to hear back from a mate who's breaking a Highline... If he lets me have it, I'm guna keep the good corrado VR bits and put them on the Golf engine to give it some extra go!Coming together finally!Just suffering from mashed hands and cut arms and a million bug bited!Porbs Just had trouble getting the drive shaft allen keys screws out due to shite tools, got myself a DAMN expensive set of allen key and socket set and they came off okOtherwise, it was all good and no probs!Just got to pick apart the loom and take the bits i need![ Edited Mon Jun 28 2004, 11:42PM ]
Pittuf 0
Socket allen key sets are the best, couldn't live without them!
MarkGolf 6
Yeah! Found out after rounded my normal allen keys! The snap on man loves me now! lol
mightyvr6 0
you need spline keys for the drive shafts, 8mm I think. The second picture is the idle stabiliser valve and isv damper. You don't really want to replace this with a mini filter as oil will drop onto the exhaust manifold and the car will stink of oil vapour inside.
MarkGolf 6
Tuesday's up-date!Basically done now, just have to pull the wiring out which I've got ready, just need to find out exactly what plugs come out from the fuse box and I'm sorted! Oh, gottta pull exhaust mani off to, but not hard! WHAT IS THIS? On both turrets...ABS sensor thing? And this set of 4 wires..?This leads to the ABS pump, but what it is exactly, as Im choosing NOT to have ABS on my car and wud like to know if I need this..Mission impossible!!Gotta find what bits i need to pull out (Apparently 3 big white plugs, but i can't see any!)All been very fun and exciting!Don't think i've done too badly for my first engine removal on my own round the back of my garden![ Edited Tue Jun 29 2004, 09:44PM ]
mightyvr6 0
the plug on the slave cylinder in the 2nd to last pic is the pedal position sensor (for the abs- it tells the abs ecu how much braking force to apply)
MarkGolf 6
Ok cool, so I can forget that then.. Cheers
Valver 0
Well done Mark, looks like it's going well.......also it's got to be the best way to learn and you can do the conversion exactly how you want it ie. smooth bay, hidden wiring etc - you doing all this?... 8o)
acf8181 0
seeing as i'm removing my gearbox in the next few days...how hard was it to remove the driveshafts (appologies if i've missed any comments on this, i've only scan read)
six appeal 53
I've done them a few times before and if you get the right tool and make sure you clean out the heads of the bolts its a piece of piss. Always give the head a tap with a hammer first to break the seal on the threads. I find it best to tap the spline tool in with a hammer gently too first before trying to attach socket and turn.
