Ok guys' date=' never having driven abroad before, what things do I need to sort out before going?

I.E - insurence, forum filling, things to make my car legal over there etc... ?

Cheers,

Pete

These days all UK insurance has to cover minimal legal requirements for EU countries. To get fully comp you simply have to tell your insurer your intend to go abroad - assuming you have fully comp in UK. They'll maybe send you a greencard, and likely a GB sticker, or tell you just to take your insurance certificate. It is best to assume that you've only got 3rd party cover on the 'Ring itself.

You should also have your MOT, V5 and driving license with you.

The hotel has WiFi, the camp site obviously doesn't. Or did you mean form filling?

For the car:

Spare bulbs for all external lamps ( one of each will do )

Warning triangle - I have a spare

First aid kit - I can borrow a spare from a friend

Fire extuingisher - I can borrow a spare from a friend

GB sticker or plates

Headlight deflectors - it is illegal to drive in Germany on sidelights alone!

Optional, though recommended, extras: Euro Breakdown cover, Medical insurance and a crash helmet.

TG

P.s. And drive on the right!

I did think everything apart from the optional extras!

But the AA now say ( http://www.theaa.com/motoring_advice/touring_tips/AA_compulsory_equipment_january2007.doc ) that in Belgium the first aid kit and extinguisher are only recommended and that a hi-vis vest is required if you break down, new one one me.

Yep, no DE on English plates, the font doesn't matter. If you get a GB sticker for your tailgate glass you should just be able to cover over the DE and flag with insulating tape. Or, as JP is doing, get GB stickers to cover over the DE part of plate.

I don't now if you can get deflectors for projector style lights. Maybe get away with more insluating tape to black off the offending portion. Or if they are LHD FKs adjust them back to 'normal' once we get there. Or finally, don't drive at night!

I won't be messing around with my car covering things with tape etc....

At the end of the day I am driving in a foreign country and I cannot be expected to know all their rules and regulations in their respective country. As long as my car is legal in my own country and I have the documents to prove it then I will be happy.

License plate with DE though is something I will remove and replace with my regular plates.

I have no warning triangle, hi vis vest, first aid kit, fire extiguisher etc... and I have no plans to buy them either.

Just hope german plod doesn't pull a gun on me :-)

Mark.

If your cars got German plates they wont let you on the ring as I found out last year, luckily I had my GB ones tho too in the boot. As for the other stuff I've never bothered but rules are rules.

You might be doing some night time driving if your car breaks down - we got to the ring 7 hours late last year cos someones car broke down.

Oh dear. I see a sub-10 minute lap coming up. You were fast enough without it. In fact, you were faster than any of the supercharged lot last year. Mind you, none of the supercharged cars were running properly at the 'Ring.

Cheers,

Andy (wish I was taking the Beemer)

yeah ive checked' date=' and it seems its just to say that all sailings will be from the western docks, in the near future..

dunno if that makes a blind bit of difference though, having never sailed from dover.

Not alot, they are only about a mile and a half of dual carriageway apart.

Might effect us as they plan to move by Easter. Leisure centre will still be the place to meet.

No lorries up the western end though, so getting in and out again should be easier.
