crish72 0
God knows what it is but when i first start my VR from cold i get what i can only describe as a whirring noise coming from the engine. It seems to go up and down with the revs and stops after say 3-4 minutes.Had a quick skeg under the bonnet today but couldnt see anything obvious,if anything it sounded like it came from the back of the engine.Anyone else had this or can shed any light?CheersChris

shail 0
Does it sound a bit like a milk float? Mine does this, it gets worse as the weather gets colder.

richievr 1
i think they all do it.i leave mine idling and don't drive it till it stops..no particular reason - i just do..gives it a chance to warm up slightly and for the oil to get everywhere before moving it.. Jk* 0
Mine also does it, just let the car warm up as much as possible before driving it...or change gear @ 2500rpm max for me!

Russ_vr6 12
mine too,i think could be the power streering pump, coz my mates old vr used to do it all the time but worse,so i think its just the pump pushing the fluid round
GVK 1
Mine does that too, I replaced the belt tensioner, but it still does it.Goes once warm tho!
spindat45 0
Mine too. I've put it down to alternator complianing at having to go to work in the cold. :-d Not a problem as long as it goes after a few minutes idling. Definatly only noticeable as it starts to get cold. Whatever the cause, its good to know its an inherant feature of these great engines.Kevin
stockers 1
yep me too, i got a feeling its the choke effect, when you start it let it run til the choke cuts off and the idle sits at normal level and it won't happpen.....
Dima 1
Mine does it as well, Im releaved now to hear its kinda normal thing
jpc 0
This has always annoyed me I thought something was wrong until I heard a cold 2L mk3 go past me and guess what? The same whine, they both must share the same bit that makes the noise I guess.
purple highline monster 0
lol mine does it too, guess its just a characteristic of the cars belt set up, its only when its cold it happens though

matty 0
It's usually the alternator providing lots of Amps to the battery just after cold start up when the charging system thinks the battery is low.The output from the alternator can then be 50 or 60 amps and the windings "flex" under the high current for a bit until the battery charges up to voltage. If the fan belt is slack on most cars it slips and squeals just after a cold start for the same reason. My son's VR6 has also been making this noise since the Wintery weather came and I think and hope its a natural function of the alternator !!!Matty.
