Buy the proper spark plugs from VW.

The lead tool is shit, i think that you can buy metal ones from VW, or if you can't be bothered like i couldn't you could take you car to VW buy the plugs and they probably wont charge you alot(Saturday morns is always good to try and get freebies) to quickly put them in for you.

Only reason I ask ingham is cos sparkplugs.co.uk tells me to buy BKR5EKU plugs. I take it the "P" in BKR5EKUP stands for "Platinum" then?

P is for platinum, and its NO point buying them. Buy the rgular BKR5EKU and be a happy man. Change them one a year, you should be fine. They are the stock plugs, and work perfekt. I ran a Z-Engineering ZR2 for 10 months with these plugs, and it was great!
