gloster 0
Was in my local garage for a quote on suspension work and he has pointed out i'm loosing a small amount of water from the left hand side of the engine [from front of car], and that basically my water pump is shot and needs replacing soon. Car drives well with no real issues [cat excluded] but has been loosing a little bit of water [about half pint a week].Had look myself and found this.http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a215/FlyingAnt008/DSC00010.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a215/FlyingAnt008/DSC00009.jpgThere is also a clicking coming from the same area which can be heard and seen here. http://s12.photobucket.com/albums/a215/FlyingAnt008/?action=view¤t=MOV00012-1.flvAnything else i should be replacing at the same time? Been quoted £220 +vat fitted?
Petesvw 0
I'd get it sorted ASAP mate, prevention better than cure and all that!Wouldn't risk losing more water and boiling yer head!!
SankysVR6 1
The clicking noise is probably the EVAP valve which is normal. If you put your hand on it, you will be able to feel it pulsingI've marked it this picture for you.[lightbox=../../e107_files/public/1168848870_611_FT153370_dsc00009.jpg][/lightbox]

gloster 0
220 plus vat is that just to do the water pump.Yes it was' date=' and no i won't be going there.Called the local vw specialists and was told it shouldn't be more than an 2 hours work if you know what your doing [believe the engine needs to be raised? -at this point i won't do myself'] but they are busy for the next month... been quoted £100 ish + parts which i'm relatively happy with, thats by a local mk4 golf specialist, but seem to know their stuff. Just hoping if it is the water pump thats nacked, this is all thats wrong!
petervr6 0
the engine does need to be raise but its only means talking the 2/3 bolts out of the front engine mount and jacking the engine up to gain access to the pump easy mate but as long as you happy thats all that matters

gloster 0
just happened to my vr. it is the water pump and took me an evening. pump cost 30 pounds from gsf. is quite an easy job to do. noticed mine when the belt started to squel so rather lucky !Got the waterpump replaced this week and it hasn't helped at all' date=' not happy as running out of things it can be and i really can't afford a money pit at the moment. :@ Looking at a new head gasket now under the theory that its failing without the water mixing with oil, [as no gunk in either tank'] straight out of the head when under pressure. Been told it may be worth replacing the thermostat first but car has no heat issues with water or oil and fans cut in as expected when required. Is there anything else it could be? Is this correct? gloster 0
Oh. If it is the head gasket is it worth upgrading to a superior gasket ie power gasket plus or the metal mk4 [one that fits]?How much am i be looking at ...? Any advice gratefully received.
