1997 MK3 VR6 57k Service - How much should I expect to pay?

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

My '97 VR6 has just hit 57k and is due a service (i.e. there is a VW sticker in the top right of the windscreen saying 57k). This will be the first service due since I have owned the car. The car is currently FVWSH and I'm wondering if I should take it to VW for the service and how much I should expect to pay?

I have spoken to them and they say as my car is approaching ten years old they can only do a 100k service. I'm just a little bit dubious about main dealers and their extortionate prices, but obviously would like to keep the FVWSH if possible.

If anyone could advise I'd appreciate it.

Cheers

Mark

i work for a dealer mate and they should be foing what is known as a 20k service,which includes oil filter (either 021 115 562 or 021 115 562 A) a sump plug (N908 132 02) a pollon filter (1H0 819 644 B) and screenwash and lube for the door hinges,locks etc

this only applys if the car has been serviced at vw's 'correct' time lol,the only other things on the scedule to be changed are the air filter and plugs which both get changed every 40k,so check when they were last done mate

Hi Russ,

Thanks for the reply. I phoned my local VW dealer and got it booked in in a couple of weeks. I said that having spoken to somebody in the know I should be able to get a 20k service and the guy said that the 100k was the equivalent service.

I said I would supply my own oil and they quoted me as £170 plus vat for the service.

I dug my history and log book out and all the stamps are in there every year (I'm the second owner and the previous owner had only done about 6k a year until I got it in May) along with all the receipts etc. Spark plugs were done last time so this is really just an oil change, fluid level check, tyre kicking service etc as far as I can tell, but I suppose it's worth paying for the stamp.

Lastly what oil should I buy? I was going to go to German, Swedish and French and get some. I've had a look online but I'm not sure what the best thing to get is. Is it silver synth that people recommend? What's the equivalent oil from GSF? I think semisynth is what I need for my car isn't it? (unless somebody else think differenlty?).

Any help would be much appreciated.

Many thanks

Mark

Just to compare, I got my proper 100K service on my 1997 and did it at a VW specialist and cost £150 including parts (plugs/oil/filters/fluids etc) and labour. The full inspection brought up a few items but mechanic said most of them can wait when I get the MOT done (gave me a voucher to get a discount from them). I will stick to specialists from now.
