The bugger got me. I changed bloody everything to get rid of the noise, lwr arm, ball joint, bearing, top mnt. Thought i'd try them first, but the nightmare came true.

124k on the clock, so not sure if it's had one before, although i was told it's a common fault. Tbh i crapped myself, even though i'm a mechy, it's a bit of a grim situation.

Anyway after a nightmare or two, i found a guy in buckely, north wales, that will recon it for £30 p/h if i whip the box out and deliver it to him. He quoted £500 plus for remove and refit, and VW quoted £1200 new!!

I'm probably looking at £300 i reckon, plus whatever the chains and a clutch cost me.

I've been pondering a semi-racing clutch so any advice on that matter would be much appreciated.

I hope this assists any other unfortunate souls.

I took the box out today. I can see why people charge 500+ for any work that needs it doing. I ordered a clutch today, which is coming on wednesday, but i need to do the chains, and the guy supplying the clutch can't supply the chain kit.

Money is a bit tight, and i'm getting the clutch on tick, but because my good friend can't get the chains, i got to pay now... bugger.

Does anyone know the price of the timing chain kit??
