92k still not done and everything sounds good, i won't bother until she rattles, if she rattles. i was speaking to a mate that works for VW and he's only ever known 1 VR thats had the chains snap and apparently it was a poorly maintained VR.

yes at 103k. glad i did - one of the tensioners was snapped in half!!!!!! but they still were pretty quiet despite this.

i needed the clutch doing on mine so i thought whilst the clutch and box are off - do the chains too..

not yet but only at 60k. I will be doing it when the time comes - clutch at the same time as well. It aint worth the risk of a new engine

I'm currently rebuilding my engine.

However, in hindsight it would be cheaper to run it til it blew and just put a new engine in rather than replace the chains.

had mine done at 100k but they were ok ,but i feel better.all it needed was the top bolt

What reg is yours ?? aparently the later VR's had better quality components, i was just wondering what the wear was like after 100k???

As i said before mines done 92K and everything is fine and i don't think that i'll bother changing unless theres a rattle.

I've just had 100K service and mechanic noticed slight rattle on idle - but said nothing to worry about ye.

my car was made in jan 1997 .there was very little wear ,if i had an early vr i would fit the later setup

ps: i only changed the Tensioners not chains as the chains were fine,most late vr's that start to rattle only need the top Tensioner bolt

there's no scheduled time VW set for changing them, so i'm told at work. get paranoid about it tho. i take it you can change just the top tensioner without a total stripdwown. my VR's the only one we ever see at my place!

^^^ Top tensioner is a hydraulic bolt, you will see it at the back of the head!

Done mine at 126k and im glad i did, done it myself with my maye whos a VW mechanic supervising, or was that the other way round..... :-d

Thanks for that info mate, mine is a late VR and i have heard the same from various sources, this just clarifies it, i think that if i do get a rattle i'll just wack a new bolt in. i think that the later VR's use kevlar and not the stuff that was used in early VR's. Bonus as far as i'm concerned.

Mines a late VR ('98R) on 160k and ive just booked mine in for a clutch and to get the chains/tensioners looked at. Got a bit of a rattle but hopefully its just the top tensioner bolt.

this was my chain guide at 72k!!! Full VWSH 2 owners, Emagine over 100k!

Ive changed many VR motors with failed top guide and then chain failure.

My advise is if the motor has 100k plus ...change the pad for the later MK4 pad or end up with a trashed engine.

mine had 89k miles, timing chain blew, bent 5 valves, total rebuild cost bout 2k, but i did manage to get the head gas flowed, port polished, put in a new clutch, mk 4 head gasket, flow the throttle body also, so its not all doom and gloom, shes flying now!!!!
