sprx3 0
Hey guys, my 1995 passat has developed a major engine rattle on idle & goes all the way up the rev range, its quite loud & im really worried to the point where i havent driven it in 2 weeks. I spoke to our local vw specialist as my first guess was the bottom end, but he told me he has never seen one let go & it would more then likely be lifters, i told him that it sounded like it was coming from the lower part of the engine, but he ensured me that the engines are well baffled & it was a sticky lifter & to change & condition the oil & do a flush & it would go away, well it didnt.after reading all the stuff about the timing chains, is there anything i should be looking for to try & work out what is wrong with my girl...im guessing that more noise would be coming from the rear of the engine(gear box side) if its the chains or is it just to hard with out pulling her apart....thanks for your help guys
Seademon 0
Could be your oil pump has given up the ghost? The timing chain noise comes from the gearbox side of the engine but doesnt really sound like its from the bottom end.I wouldnt drive it tho just incase its something that could be fixed before the whole engines ruined. ingham 5
how many miles has engine done?
Copper 0
if its a clunking sound...similar to a hammer being tapped on the block or manifold, then its going to be bottom end unfortunately. More you drive it, the more damage it will do. Noise will prob get worse as engine gets hotter and the oil thinner. £500+ for that im afraid
SiGainey 1
If it's bottom end, chuck some new bearings in it - they are cheap and quite often get you going again. Not perfect, but at least you can drive it

Not perfect, but at least you can drive it [/quote']did that myself and it still knocked! if its loud then i wouldnt bother, something is bound to be oval by now. Bolts need replacing along with the bearings if your gona go that route, and there £7 each!Youd still have to do an oil+filter change, along with a new oil pump at a guess (£110).Hopefully theres no swarf in the oil, if there is, then its engine strip time regardless.M
sprx3 0
hey guys finally had time to pull the engine appart to have a look at it & its the retainers on the timing chain, i also noticed that the head gasket was leaking a little bit of water to i decided to pull the head off also, i'll be pullling the sump off tomorrow & checking the bearings to make sure its all good before i slap it all back together, well thats after i get the parts in which could take up to 3 weeks through VW are there any places that you would recomend that could send the parts over for a reasonable price over there?also what else should i be looking at & replacing?
