dumb noobs question

Recommended Posts

i want to start playing around with my 93 k plate vr but im working to a tight budget (probably mostly good second hand stuff) and was hoping for some pointers in the right direction, would i be right with a filter/induction kit along with an exhaust plus a re-map? would a 2.9 tb or inlet mani do anything? and what sort of gains would be expected from the above if any, unfortunatly i dont have the money to charge it. ive probably committed a cardinal sin and already fitted a universal cone filter with cold air feed and although it doesnt feel any different it certainly now sounds how a v6 should, lol.

The 2.9 TBs are bigger so should/could make a slight difference, however there has been a bit of discussion recently as to whether a 2.9 manifold is good or bad ( http://www.vr6oc.com/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?144196.30 ).

A custom remap will be around £400, but being an OBD1 it would benefit from a generic £30 ebay chip ( http://www.vr6oc.com/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?145259.post ) I don't have a before and after rolling road figure, but would agree with JezMoz that it has made a noticable difference. I'll have a better idea the next time I do a 1/4mile sprint.

OBD1 have more latent potential, VW tuned them down to avoid German tax laws in the early 90s. OBD2 claim the same power output but it's not unusual for an OBD2 engine to produce nearer 190. The generic chips just makes the OBD1 map more like the OBD2 one. We are talking pukka ECU eeproms not just a resistor which makes the engine think the air is denser.

Obviously a custom remap is bound to give better results but you did say you where on a tight budget.

ok so i should probably be looking at a superchip or something a shop sells as own brand to save the pennies. and maybe see a couple of extra horses on top, and with the other stuff bring it back up to or slightly higher than what its supposed to have, i doubt with my budget i'll ever get to the magical 200bhp, its got 120k on the clock and although still goes like stink has probably lost the best part of 15 bhp over the years, i dont want monster power, i just want the car to feel a little better at the bottom end and of course get that lovely v6 roar when im going full chat from the lights :-)

You might be surprised. I was when my 160K mile OBD1 showed 184 at the last rolling road day. At that time it only had a K&N panel, decat and the unproven 'Power plus gasket'

Superchips do have a poor reputation, mainly because they do cost 'real' money whereas the Ebay knock offs are less then a tank of petrol or a night out.

well mine is a k reg so goes i'll have the nice easy fit version please, lol. sounds interesting, also sounds easier to get more from the older cars, thank you, looks like i know what i got planned then, ive also been offered a 2nd had wet nos kit from a friend who says he can get the xtra nozzles so i can go direct port with it, does this mean i have to dril 6 holes in my inlet manifold or am i being stupid?
