phoenix 0
Just got back from buying my highline today. I really enjoyed the drive home and I'm looking forward to many fun times together. However and this is driveing me nuts already, there is a continuous tapping sound coming from the engine on tickover. The car has done 76k miles and I just hope it isn't the cam chain although it doesn't sound like that. Incidentally looking in at the engine from the front of the car where is the timing chain located to the left or the right. This noise is to the right, you know where it says VR6 on the engine its to the right of that.Any ideas please put me out of my misery.ThanksPS Will post some pics tomorrow!! Focker-out 0
Congratulations on the new car, but bad news on the tapping, could be one of two things the chains but thats more of a grumbling noise they make or as i suspect its a hydraulic lifter (tappet) thats not filling up as it should, had this in my Corrado VR6 a few years back and it drove me insane. phoenix 0
So if its the latter which I hope it is out of the 2 how is it resolved and is it costly?
purple highline monster 0
you can get new hydraulic tappets which is quite expensive and a pretty major amount of work as the cams need to come out or......you can do an oil change using quantum silver semi synthetic oil from vw and see if that helps, some times they dont "hydraulic" due to bit of grit or mucky oil in them, try that first its the cheapest option
phoenix 0
Thanks for that. To be honest it was said that the car is due for a service so fingers crossed some new oil will do the trick.Where's a good place for said oil?Thank for all your help!

phoenix 0
To be honest I spotted it straight away and he assured me it was ok as he is an aston martin technician. I've come to the conclusion its more of a whirring noise and it can't be heard from inside the car, so here's hoping. If it is serious though I will be having words and demanding some money back, I do have friends who are good at persuation!

matth76 1
All vr's have noisy tappets. It's only noticable on tickover. Just one of those things. Nothing to worry about unless it is really really loud. A good vr specialist like stealth or the phirm will replace your tappets in around 3 hours maybe even less.
phoenix 0
That's what it sounds like actually, so that makes it re-assuring.Thanks mate!!
