ABS light on after brake change / bleeding

Recommended Posts

I recently had my rear pads and discs done, and also a new bit of brake pipe. After this my ABS light has been on. The mechanic had no VAGCOM etc... He tells me that he thinks the ABS light is on as you may need VAGCOM to bleed the brakes properley. He took off the brakes to check the ABS rear sensors, which are fine.

Would not having VAGCOM cause the ABS light to come on following bleeding the brakes?

PS I would have taken it to Stealth Racing, but didnt have the time (Doh!)

If the brakes need bleeding then it is best done using VAG-COM as that tells you what to do and at what stage as wheel as activating each solenoid to bleed each caliper in turn. This is from my understanding and from what ive read up on.

Please correct me if I'm wrong though.

i had my brakes bled at VW by my master tac mate ;) and he didnt use VAG-COM, why would you? you might need to reset through your port as the signal has been lost when the discs where off? especially if the ignition was operated whilst they were off as that would show fault in the system it can be coded out amd see if it returns and it will show if its a sensor or something else, mine came on the other day and said "abs pump" i nearly shat myself!!! but it was just a gremlin as it reset and never returned!!! think it was just moisture in the engine bay from cleaning it that caused it

Sanky - I have the old discs - I'll have a look for the cog thing. I'm driving it over to stealth 2mrw o get the codes checked. Cheers for the insight - still no definite answer on the use of VAGCOM though. I'll ask vince 2mrw.

it sounds like the sensor rings on the inside of the discs are missing or maybe they broke 1 . when i changed mine i had to prise them off then gentlly crush them in a vice to get them to fit snugly onto the new discs if they are loose they will give a incorrect reading . i also changed all my brake lines as long as the ignition is on and you pressure blead them they are fine . I also changed my rear axel bushes and like a numpty turned the igniton on with the abs sensor plugs disconected the light went out once i drove it as the abs does a self check every time you start the car and drive off. just removed code from memory later on that day

Spot on ventovr6essex1 - had the codes read this morning, Came up with mechanical fault rear left wheel. Vince said straight away that it'll be the sensor rings (he called them spiders). He said that as rust build up behind the rings on the disc the rings get streched, and need to be 'unstreched'. He said he does that he does that by putting the rings on and then puts a jubilee clip around it and tightens the jubilee clip until the ring fits snug.

Cheers for the help.

sounds like a right monkey fitted them then?

My mates brother fitted them - he's sound and usually knows what hes doing. I spoke to him sbout the ABS pick up ring, and he was surprised that they were to blame, as he had the brakes off twice after the abs light went on and checked all the ABS parts were on right / tight. Well, hes going to have another look today and try and sort it.
