VR6Pete's Golf Mk2 VR6 Conversion [Finished]

Recommended Posts

So I thought I had finally finished my VR6, albeit the charger, however that all changed at the Nurburgring 09/04/07 where I was involved in a high speed crash with the armco.

The following pictures show whats now left of my pride and joy.

I will create a journal of the progress of this project, starting with the stripping of parts on my smashed VR6, and then onwards with the build of my new VR6.

I hope you will enjoy following this project as much as I will be over the coming months.

Watch this space!

Thanks.

Pete

Ouch with the mk3 mate... Was worrying me when looking into doing Nurburgring the costs of crashing into barriers etc...

Yep, time to get cracking and build something even better! With that rebult engine & box out of R4, you've got a sound base to work from.

A Mulberry highline is the obvious choice, but how about a Syncro? I know of someone that might be selling one...

GOOD NEWS!

I was able to drive the car off the recovery truck and reversed it down into the drive - sounds good to hear the VR purring away at the touch of the key!

Gearbox / Engine look fine.

The gearbox mount had snapped on the mount, leaving the gearbox in tact, and as suspected the driveshaft looks a bit out of place.

Defo a right off, the chassis leg has been pushed back and its now preventing the car from steering.

However, the car is hardly irreconcilable from the front, still cant believe how we managed to escape without serious injury, or worse.

I will upload my initial damage investigation pictures later tonight.

Some little bugger had nicked my aerial though, but thats the least of my worries! lol

If I did claim, even if i was fully comp I wouldn't manage to re-insure one if my 2 years + no claims lost. so I've decided to take it on the chin and build a new vr6 and be able to insure one as my policy has now shifted to my punto, building up more no claims.

CIS did call me with regards to the incident, I said it was on a private road, of which the damages were reimbursed at the time, no one else was involved and I didnt wish to make a claim, but I did want the vehicle returned.

The vehicle arrived today, I've not had to pay any further money, as it was covered under my breadkdown policy / recovery policy.

There was 2 other cars on the same flat loader, an M5 and an Evo which were apparently recovered from the ring also. he did state that he bought a total of 5 cars back over there!

Couldnt believe it ran. went in reverse all fine etc.. didnt run it for too long due to the "angle" of the engine and more importantly minus a coolant system!

Grinder will be out this weekend to cut that chassis leg off so the car is easier to steer when pushing in and out the garage, the engine will also be coming out with a bit of luck.

Will upload pictures in a few minutes..

Here are the pictures as promised.

Not much left of the front end really.

You can see the extent of the damage to the chassis leg, as well as the cross member pretty much dragging on the floor.

I was quite happy to get it down the drive way at last and quite relieved the engine and box was still good.

These pictures shows where the mount that bolts the gearbox to the car has given away, thus 1 gearbox left quite happily moving forward as well as reverse.

Engine bay shots, showing where the engine has dropped, and the negative battery terminal hanging out of the batter.

As well as the door dropping, the foot well in the rear passenger side area has been forced up into the car, a significant hump can be seen under the carpet.

Drive Shaft, picture speaks for it's self.

Some of the bits found at the track side, now in boot.

It's final resting place, the car was reversed into it's new home, well... what was left of it!

Pete,

Rather then restricting your self to an R reg shell so that you can keep your plate, why not get a new one.

There's alot of VWC plates for £250. Including P3 (Pe) VWC - suitable for the VR6 already offered - or H17 (Hit) VWC or M17 (My) VWC
