I think the reason SimplyVR6 had a moan is Matth76 said "has the chains just been done and someone might have put it back together wrong and the timing might be out by a couple of mm " but with chains the least it can be out is one link which is way more than a couple of mm and it would proberly run like a bag of shit not just a flat spot.

But SimplyVR6 should have just pointed that out instead of having a dig at Matth76

That said Matt said his had a flat spot and getting the chains done fixed it which could be right because old chains could streched a small bit knocking the timing out a tad' date=' but he said new ones might be set up wrong and out a couple of mm which is wrong.

I hope i'm right as i'm no expert :)

When chains are taken out or replaced or the head is taken apart the cams have to come out. If these are put in incorrectly (by a few mm's) - so the timing is either retarded or advanced you will get a flat spot - the flat spot will either be low down in the rev range or higher up - depending on whether it is retarded or advanced. I had this and the car had a big flat spot up to 2500 revs but above that it was fine. Drove fine and smooth apart from that but was annoying. Subtle markers are present to avoid all this but it can be easy to get it wrong. Basically it is a case of getting the chains and cams to all be correct together (the cams themselves have to be put in correctly too). If it is just the cams they can be checked in about 3-4 hours or so. If it turns out to be the chains it can be a far more indepth job - especially if it is the bottom chain..the gearbox has to come out to rectify this - this will be expensive. Hence my recommendation Toph that you get the seller to fix the problem before selling the car, just to be safe.

Hopefully after saying all this it may just be faulty leads or spark plugs that aren't quite tightened (when I first got my car a couple years back I had it serviced at my local main dealer and they neglected to tighten up every one of the spark plugs leading to to lumpiness and flat spots)...so could just be that.
