Stealth shelf fitment

Recommended Posts

I've just installed an MDF stealth shelf in the VR. Works lovely, except that the pegs on the tailgate aren't strong enough to hold the straps that lift it up when the tailgate is opened. They just get ripped out of their sockets.

Has anyone else had the same thing? How did you get around it?

well, (from the front seat passengers point of view) rear speakers aren't necesary. but a couple of coaxals in the rear sides should suffice.

6x9's don't sound very good (whatever people say, i've yet to here a nice pair...and i've heard some pretty expensive ones). also, havign shelf speakers is like putting a 'nick me' sticker on the windows.

even a stealth shelf is obvious to anyone who knows anything about cars.

these are just my views of course...if you're happy thats all that matters of course.

i partly agree with acf imo 6x9s can sound nice but i also really dont see the point in fittin them in a golf the front speakers r by far the most impotant for sound the rears bassically just fill it out a bit get the best u can afford in the front and some reasonable coaxials or componants in the rear i personally wouldnt bother with 6x9s in mine

Agreed about the front speakers, it's these that give you all your stereo imaging. Got some 3-way components for the front on order!! Bass units in the doors, midrange in the dash and angled tweeters going on the A-pillars.

The Infinity 6x9s I've got on the shelf sound great IMO. If they didn't, I would have got rid of them. The MDF shelf now gives me the option to add a sub later on (the standard parcel shelf wouldn't take the weight and I wouldn't want to use up loads of boot space with a box)

What setup have u got, acf? Components in front doors and rear side panels?

I agree that a bolt would be the best way of securing the shelf straps. Trouble is, there's no thread to screw the bolt into. Some sort of spread washer perhaps?

i've got calbier components in the front (allstealthy, tweeter in dash, mid range in door). alpine components in rear (not very good, were in front when i bought the car, but as i don't have to sit in the back i don't care really...will get coaxials or another set of caliber components for the rare sometimes). the a JL 10W0 in boot in sealed box....sounds perfect, is stealthy, and theres plenty of boot space left.

be sure to get an open air sub or make a sealed box around the speaker a normal sub wouldnt appreciate bein left unsealed

thats not 55w rms its more like 27 rms is THE number u want mpo or pmpo or any other can b very misleading i saw an amp that said 2000 watts when i read the rms it was somethin like 2x 25 watts rms but yes top end head units sound very good pioneer dehp9600 for example hehe

fair enough but u dont get any hiss with amps u dont need to hav it turned up either

every system i've heard that has the speakers running off amps has lost some of the 'warmth' of the music if you know what i mean....probably is too perfect, i mean vinyls sound great with a bit of crackle!
