budgie 0 Posted June 14, 2007 Report Share Posted June 14, 2007 Hi yal clued up peeps. i need my piston rings replaced and was told it can be done with engine still in car and going through the bottom by unbolting sump, and crankshaft can somehow be loosened and pistons would be exposed for ring change also bore inspection, leaving the block and head intact.Ive also been told this is not true and cant be done like this... whats confusing is both these opinions came from vw mechanics.... Project-VR6-38 0 Posted June 18, 2007 Report Share Posted June 18, 2007 the tool, if im not mistaken is just a ring compressor and you can pick these up from most good motor factors!! you do however need to go in via the top of the engine, but it can still be done whilst the engine is in the car!! if your doing it yourself you need to make sure you know what your doing and know how everything goes back together and the correct torque figures for all of the engine bolts. the sump will have to come off anyway to release the conrods form the crankshaft! whilst down there i would jus replace all the big end bearings, just to be safe Link to post Share on other sites
