Loses power on corners when low on petrol

Recommended Posts

When my car gets low on petrol 1/4 -1/8 full , it will cut out going round tight corners then when straight again it kicks back in and alls fine. Once i fill up again with petrol i have no troubles till the level again gets low.

Now by my amazing powers of deduction i realise its to do with petrol moving in the tank as i go round corners so there is no fuel to be drawn by the pump, is this a common problem easy fix???

Hi,

Alot of cars with electric fuel pumps under or behind the tank have baffles to stop the fuel sloshing about starving the pump when low and cornering or going up hill (early mk3 XR3i's were really bad for this).

Having never pulled a Golf tank apart to peek inside I cannot say if they are baffled or not but they should be. However have you hit or damaged the tank at all? We used to see a lof of cars where the tank had been hit and the fuel then sits to the side of the ding - sometimes starving the pickup pipe for the pump.

Might be worth a prod about with the tank dropped to see if it is crushed in anyways. The other nasty btw is a blocked breather and having the tank "implode" so that it again has changed shape ...

Regards,

Steve

you normally either have a swirl pot or a sump in the tank so there is always fuel for the pump, filling up before it gets down to qurter of a tank, i imagine , is not what VW intended as this would be empty on the gauge if this was the case, i presume its crud in the filter or a dodgy pipe somewhere.
