terrible vibration when accelarating above 60mph

Recommended Posts

Hi, i have just brought a vr6 highline, which had an MOT yesterday (by the garage i brought it from) when i go above 60mph i get a large amount of vibration, making it impossible to go above 85mph. this vibration only seems to happen when accelarating, if you coast it nearly disapears. the car is an auto if that makes any difference. Has anyone had a similar problem? i have checked the tyre pressures, and spoken to ATS tyres, who drove the car, and whislt they think the tracking may be slightly out, it does not sound like a balance issue. they noted that the steering seemed very notchy, it is lighter turnign one way than the other, and also that there seemed to be excess play at the internal gearbox end of the drive shaft. could this cause it? any help is much appreciated! i am beggining to think that it may have been a dodgy mot, as the ABS does not work, and has had the light disabled!!!

Kind Regards

Nick

Hi Nick,

In regards to the ABS light not working, I think we'll all agree that it should have been an MOT fail. And could be the tip of the iceberg so I'd suggest....

From the VOSA web site

"What if I think it has wrongly passed?

These cases usually relate to recently purchased vehicles and you should let VOSA know as soon as possible. VOSA will then offer an appointment within 5 working days to recheck your vehicle without charge, provided:

* not more than 28 days have elapsed since the MOT test

* not more than three months have elapsed since the MOT test for a rust or corrosion related problem

What action can I take against the garage?

VOSA cannot request compensation on your behalf - you can however take action in conjunction with your local trading standards department, take out proceedings personally or refer the matter to the police.

Any subsequent action VOSA decide to take against the garage that tested your vehicle is done at their discretion, and should have no bearing on any action you may decide to take.

Contacting VOSA

The address of the local VOSA office is displayed in MOT testing stations or can be obtained from our general enquiry unit on 0845 600 5977 (local rate) or 0870 606 0440 (national rate)."

Did you buy the car from them after they MOT'd the car, or did you buy it with MOT then take it back to get a new MOT?

If you bought it after they MOT'd it then i'd go the route TG says. Vosa will tell you whether or not it should of passed the MOT, if they say no then IF it was part of the sale then i'd ask for my money back for the car as it was part of the deal.

IF you took it back to get a new MOT then still go to VOSA but be warned you might be without a car if they fail it, then its back to the garage who MOT'd it for the argument that will entail

Thanks guys, the garage have replaced the front wishbones and sorted the abs, but i am still getting the terrible vibration above 60. I have taken it to Marlow VW (Specialist) and they can see nothing wrong with it! does anyone have any other idea's?

Kind Regards

Nick

Not too sure about the vibration above 60. Its happened to me in the past which was down to a wheel balance problem, but it seems you have discounted that - have you had all the wheels onto a balancing machine?. On the steering - mine was heavier one way than the other, which was down to a worn steering rack. Got a refurbed one put in and it sorted it.

Thanks guys, i have replaced both the engine mounts, and the gearbox mount, but i have been trying to fix the ABS pump, so have not actually been able to try it, but the gearbox mount that i took off was pretty nackered, so fingures crossed!!
