peterp 0
I have 1995 VR6 with about 30,000 km since a complete engine rebuild. The motor performs like new, but there is an occasional hot start problem [cold starting is no problem].The motor starts easily enough, but only runs for about 2 seconds.During that 2 seconds, you can let it idle, or rev it, but it will cut out after about 2 seconds. If you rev it, and it cuts out, you can switch the ignition off and then on again [while the flywheel keeps the engine rotating] and it will rev for another 2 seconds before cutting out again. This can be repeated indefinitely. The engine immobilizer has been checked, along with the various sensors mounted on the engine and cooling system, as well as all electrical connections, all work done by professional auto electricians.I am hoping there are others who have experienced and fixed such a problem, as I cannot use the vehicle with any confidence.Thank youPeter

matth76 1
I would have thought if it was the immobilizer it wouldn't turn over at all... but I might be wrong. Are all the leads and plugs ok? They can make a huge difference to the running if one of them is not right.
peterp 0
Thanks you for the replies thus far.To clarify, yes the plug leads are pretty new, and the immobilizer unit has been removed and checked by the VW agents, and appears to be OK.The engine starts readily at all times, except when its at running temperature, and even then the problem is sporadic, but appears to be more frequent then say a month ago.Peter

Moochalargo 0
My car does this and i have found the best thing to do is to get out alarm the car and then disarm again and get in! Then she fires normally first time and is fine!! i think it is a transponder related problem.
peterp 0
My apology for not answering sooner, but my VR6 was recently written off by a large tree that fell on it during a severe storm. However, to answer, the problem was the IGNITION READER COIL / CABLE.This carries the signals from the key reader [reads the key transponder] to the engine computer. When this becomes older it becomes more sensitive to interfearence from the surrounding wires. The answer was to get an appropriate length of plastic hose, slit it along one side and slip it over the cable. The extra 1 - 2 mm of shielding fixed the problem. If this dosen't work 100% you will have to fit a new coil and cable [supplied as a unit part # 1HO 953 254 F], which is not too costly, but also involves a re-coding process to get it to read the key transponder, a specialised procedure. If anybody needs photos of this or the VW parts catalogue please mail me directly at peterp@worldonline.co.zaRegardsPeter

superted23 0
i should have replied to this way back at the time but was busy tinkering, i took the dials out and disconnected the immobiliser box behind the dash, cleaned the connectors and it works fine as far as I know, I still have the problem of erratic revs every now and then but I can live with that for the speed, noise and joy or a vr
