Alloy wheels D.I.Y Refurb, anyone done it before?? Now done with new pics........

Recommended Posts

Hello Guy's.

Just picked up a set of Audi S3 alloys for the vr, however they are in need of a refurb. Money is tight at the moment so I thought I would try a refurb myself. Found this link from google on how to go about it. Anyone here done this before??? If so please can you tell me how much primer, paint and laquer I will require. I intend using the spray cans :) , so an estimate in 400ml cans will be helpful.

Thanks guys.

u really need all the right equipment like a D/A to rub all the marks out, they will need priming which would be ok to use a etch primer in a spray can, u could use aerosol to base them up, but really u want to clear coat them with a spray gun...hope this helps..

Gv_vr6, I think you have a good point, I bought a detail sander and spent 30 mins on the worst wheel (above), sanded pic below. Need to get some sanding blocks tomorrow and get the curves done also a bit of filler. If all fails then might spray them all black?? But it is worth a try. Also these wheels are not difficult to sand. Oh and my spray booth is going to be a big box in my balcony. :)

I've done a couple of sets using spray cans from halfords...I removed kerb marks with a flapper wheel and then rubbed them down with scotch pads. I used a can of primer, 2 cans of alluminium and 2 cans of laquer... it's pretty easy to get a good finish but although it'll cost a frctiopn of powder coating they wont be as hard wearing and will pick up stone chips

Ok, one wheel down! All I can say is easy peesy, first time I ever done a refurb and it seems to have been sucessful. The only mistake I made was not rubbing it down properly as there are some minor defects after paint but barely noticable.

Pic below.

PS: Did not remove tyres as they are going to be changed anyways.
