matth76 1
Who did the work mate? I paid a "well known" garage to do my chains and turns out they never actually took my gearbox out (verified by two external specialists) and just replaced the top tensioner. I still had the chain rattle afterwards and they had even put the cams back in incorrectly resulting a huge flat spot low down in the revs. Above 2.5k revs it was fine. If I were you I would find out if they actually took the gearbox out (as the job is impossible to do if the box is not taken out). Could be that they put the cams back in incorrectly. If the timing is out by a very small amount it will result in poor running, either very low down in the rev range or high up in the rev range. Are you sure it's just the usual tappet noise? If it's a raspy rattle in the background as well as the tappet noise then that doesn't sound right and I would take it back to the garage. They should fix it all for free. MetzVR6 0
DB auto's in handsworth sheffield did it. I have spoken to the guy today and he assures me both chains, tensioners and guides were done correctly. the rattle is more rythmic than before..kinda like a chain catching as it turns. gets quicker with the revs. how do i get the timing checked on the vr engine? mannie 0
What year is your car ? the guys in DB auto's must be DEAF if they can't hear the rattle after they " fixed it "
MetzVR6 0
It a 1997 on a P plate. I'm not sure the rattle was there last week when i picked it up to be honest as i'm funny about things being just right and had already sent it back once with lumpy idling
matth76 1
Take it to another vw specialist who will listen to your engine (for free of course) and tell you if you have chain rattle or what the noise is. Also get them to check if the gearbox has been recently removed - which they'll be able to tell by the state of the bolts etc. Then if they confirm it is still chain rattle that is present take your car back to DB and say you have had it independently checked and the chain rattle is still present. Same thing happened to me, and the garage, Storm Developments, hadn't even taken my gearbox out, verified by two well known independents and the noise was still there. Makes you mad that some garages (so called "specialists") try to pull these kinds of scams on us and take our trust for granted. However in your case it may be totally innocent and it could be something else. Either way get it checked over by another vw specialist. They won't charge you to listen to your engine noise. Good luck mate.

matth76 1
Both obd1 and the later obd2 cars have two chains. However the actual thickness / width of the chain is double on the top or bottom chain on the obd2...can't remember.Gavin, not much point just doing the top guide. Can't do the bottom guide without removing the gearbox - so may as well replace all the chains at same time as the labour is huge to replace the gearbox - and the chains can stretch and snap if not replaced. Get clutch done at same time too... will save you a huge amout in long run. Best to get all done while the box is out.
