Guest A
Can anyone help shed light on this problem/I have been loosing coolant slowly for about a year now, but it is starting to leak faster which is a concern. When the garage pressure tests the system, there is no issue or leak. They have looked at this four times now. It is only when I drive, that the water level starts dropping again. They have replaced the water pump, as well as the thermostat housing seals and o'rings.I am concerned that they will end up replacing everything and the problem will still be there, and I will be broke!Has anyone had a similar problem or possibly know what the cause could be.Much thanks for any replies.Anthony

VR6Rich 3
Ive just replaced the cap on mine and it has stopped leaking fluid now. It was showing up as dried pink stuff all around the bottle and beneath the bottle. Maybe worth a try? Only cost £6 from VW.
rikkirw 0
Check the coolant run on pump, run your fingers underneath the pump and check for leaks there.Mine leaks there seems to be a gasket between the two halfs of the pump, dont know if you can get it seperate though ?! VRmonster 1
i had this happen, very slow loss of coolant at first, then got heavier, then my heater matrix went on me. £17 and a stripped n replaced dash later, and shes fixed. try letting her run, or drive with the heaters on, and check for dampness in the footwells, around the heater vents. just a possability
Macca 1
Head gasket? could be a possibility, have you noticed any difference in how the car runs? noticed any smell/ oil in the coolant?
Guest A
It is a 94 Golf VR6, all stock standard. I wil have a look at the cap, it does not seem to be leaking there, there is no pink residue. There seems to be no oil in the coolant either, I will check it again this afternoon. The engine seems to be running fine, I will be having it serviced in the next couple of months, so I can ask them about the head gasket. As I said the pump has just been replaced, but I will check under it. The garage pressure tested the system overnight, as well as when cold and when hot. It seems that it leaks only when being driven, and it leaks more when driven harder. In general the water level drops about 20mm every 100km / 60 miles. The engin is fairly clean, though it has dried white splashes over most of it at the moment, I am not sure if this is from going through puddles or from leaks. I will investigate more this afternoon. Thanks for the replies.
acf8181 0
have you done a leak test? they put crystals in the coolant, run the car, and see what colour the coolant changes to...tells them if the h/g is ok.i have a coolant leak prob as well...did a pressure test and it appeared to be coming out the thermostat hosuing...changed the seals and its still leaking...thinkin it may be coming out the hose that runs near it, but not actually onto the housing. Guest A
Hey thanks for all of your advice everyone. I have been keeping an eye on the leak, and it has subsided now, over the course of about 120mls. Maybe when the Thermostat seals and orings were changed it did the trick, though it is strange that about 1 liter of coolant has disapeared since that was done. Still as long as it is maintaing the level now I am happy. With exception that some scumbag stole the whole grille of the front of my VR6 the other night. Thanks againAnthony

VR6Steve 0
Many years ago, when I was working for a VW dealership in East London a similar thing happened. A service customer dropped their Mk2 off early. By the time we got there (about 8am) the grille and headlamps were gone.
