Grinding noise coming from left side of engine.

Recommended Posts

please help me. i've got a 96 vr6 golf.

i just drove back from work and when i got close to my door, i turned the music down on the stereo and heard a horrible grinding noise coming from the engine.

if you look at the engine, there is a grey 'lid' on the top with the vw logo and the vr6-dohc written underneath it. to the left of that, there is a black 'compartment', about 6 inches by 4 inches, (shaped like a 'back-to-front D'

the grinding noise definitely sounds like it's coming from there and it doesn't sound good!

how bad is this?

sorry, i'm a compete non-expert when it comes to engines...

btw, i'm not sure how long i was driving like this cos the music was loud in the car and i wouldn't have heard it. the drive from work takes about 15 minutes.

i had another look and it seems like it might (as you say) be coming from below that black part i have marked in the picture.

the car is parked outside my mates house now, so i'm thinking about calling the RAC tomorrow morning. do you reckon they will be able to diagnose that problem on a call out?

Probably better off towing it to a garage if it is coming from inside the engine, if its just the idler pulley bearing thats an easy and cheap enough job to get sorted. If you suspect it is comung from inside the engine itself play it safe and get a tow from Mr RAC

could be the tensioner?? or the waterpump??, i had the same on mine once, makes a loud grinding noise from under the belt tensioner??

the bearings were shot in the pump and the fins were hitting inside the block, i continued to drive it a mile down the road and the belt came off where there was so much play in the pump..

i wouldnt drive it again til u get it looked at.... gd luck

the RAC man has just been. he said the water pump needs to replaced because the bearings have gone.

he rang a local garage in slough, which he recommended and after a few minutes conversation, he came back with a price.

£300 plus vat...

that includes labour, which the book says is about 5 hours...

does this sound like i'm being ripped off?

i held back on getting the car towed to the garage immediately until i asked on here, so if it seems reasonable, i will get the car towed there tomorrow...

bet the local garage was a mates place! Easy enough job, but one of those that is a head do and you just want it over!! Think id get a garage to do it as that is a reasonably good price. Its probably £40 ish for the pump, £25 for 3ltrs of coolant, say £15 for those little bits that add up, o-rings, seals etc so your getting a good deal really for around £80-100 labour

the garage was definitely a mate's place.

my suspicion was immediately raised when he went into the cab of his van to make the call. he was on first name terms with the guy.

my flat-mate says i should report him (as did my son's mother) because they said he's not allowed to do that. he must have a 'arrangement' with the guy who owns the garage.

first thing he said was 'there is a garage that we work with' as if it was somehow authorised by the RAC...

Yes you would be getting ripped off!

I paid £130.95 in January at a local Vw specialist and they charged me for 6 hours labour [said it would take a bit longer as first one they'd done!].

Hope you get it all sorted geezer at a decent price.
