Travelled down to Milton Keynes from Grimsby to pick up my new Mercedes rims for the VR on Saturday ready for the VW Festival on Sunday,

As I returned to come home, the coolant level indicator started flashing, so I pulled into the nearest services on the M1 and let it cool down for a while. Popped the bonnet, and the coolant level was at the bottom of the reservoir. Took the cap off, slowly, and as the pressure was released, the coolant rose and came out of the reservoir top. No longer lacking in coolant fluids!

Coolant temp sat at dead half all the time. No obvious problems there.

Put the cap back on, set off again and within 20 miles, the warning light was flashing again.

Pulled into the next services and the same occurred, only this time, after the water rose, it fell back down and was below the level. Filled up and set off... and by the time I got home, the same thing happened again.

There are two, maybe three, causes in my eyes.

1) head gasket - please let it not be that!

2) dodgy thermostat

3) dodgy resevoir cap

And... why does the pressure build up so high?

So, my first job is to remove the thermostat completely just to see if this makes any difference. If not, then the reservoir cap... and if that doesn't work, then I'll have to resign myself to the fact that it could be the head gasket.

Been advised that a Mk4 VR head gasket is the one to go for should I need one...

Any help and advice would be more than welcome.

Pics on my phone. Will take some photos with the camera tonight and post them up. They look great... well chuffed with them. from the Edition 38 forum. The guy I got them from had a supercharged Mk3 VR6 that had been on the front cover of PVW a few months back... metallic black on Image 16's with baby blue interior... lovely car!

Don't know the drop on it as this is the stance when I bought it a month ago. I'm replacing all the suspension as it's quite bouncy at the front and I've caught the sump a couple of times already at speed. Also the top mounts are knocking... so I'm waiting on delivery of some coil-overs as we speak.

Loving it now with the new rims instead of the BBS Solitudes. Still a few more things to do to it to get it up to scratch...

Update... 17/09/07

After a bit of invvestigating by my local VW Audi specialist (Grimsby) we've found some light water seepage from main coolant flange under the coil-pack.

It's in on Wednesday for a new flange unit, thermostat, thermo housing and all related seals.

Hopefully will stop my constant coolant loss. Fingers crossed.

I had this problem on my old VR beofre it got fixed and I sold it to I guy in Belfast, it turned out that a small peice of the thermostat hosing broke off and got jammed in the therostat. My mechanic pulled the peice of thermostat housing out to show me, I got a new housing from VW for about £40 bit it cured the cars continual thirst for water which appeared to not leak out anywhere.

Grrrrr!

Turns out it didn't fix the problem after all. 300 miles and 4 litres of water later, I'm not impressed.

After further investigation, it turns out that the electric water pump had siezed. Not only that, but the feed to it wasn't pushing any power to it either, so a dicky sensor as well. That's now been taken out temporarily so as not to block the flow and the coolant re-tested... STILL NO WATER FLOW... (heater only gets hot when moving and after removing a coolant hose, water wasn't being pushed round at all!) so I can inly surmise that the mechanical water pump is goosed too. So it's off the road until Monday when it's going in for new water pumps!

Wondered why it got hot so quick and the rad fans were almost constantly on.

Grrrrr! again.
