9j scrubbing on rear arches with pics.

Recommended Posts

unsure whether i had posted this within the right section.

the problem i've got is that the rear suspension/wheels on my vento is catching some how. its really beginning to cheese me off. since i've bought it, i've put the rear on standard springs replacing 40mm fk springs with fk dampers it came with. now it sits a little high but at sensible rate, i now find that it looks ok for rear passengers, but as soon as i have people sit in the rear, it becomes really low again.

i'm beginning to think that it may be the 9 wide wheels (i think i mean the offset but i'm just repeating what somenoe said to me) at the rear or the widened arches.

has anyone had widened arches or 9 wide wheels on the rear? any problems? on golf or vento.

information is a bit vague... what is scraping on what? wheel on arch or wheel on suspension? what size are the wheels? What is the offset?

If you've got 9" wide wheels chances are that'll be the cause of the problem, either the offset is too high and theyre fouling the shocks or the offset is too low and theyre catching on the arch...not sure what you mean by widened arches becase that should reduce the scraping if its the latter

its not as low as it is now in the pic.

sorry for confusion. tiredness can really make you type badly.

i think the wheel is catching on the arches. has anyone had anyone probs with 9" wide offset? all i know is that it starts scaping when i have passengers in the back. should the suspension be this soft?

If you have put the rear on standard springs and you have bigger then standard wheels then you got to expect it to start scraping with passengers.

Its a 4 door for a reason; to carry passengers; and carry them in a certain level of comfort. This means the springs would need to be soft enough to absorb bumps etc.

But now you've got bigger wheels, both width and diameter wise, you've reduced space in the arches. Even with them flared the space around the inside of the arch and the wheel will be reduced.

So now when your comfy suspension lets the wheel ride up into the arch to absorb the bumps, its scrubbing!

Up-rated, stiffened springs would be a start to solving the problem....... i think lol :)

Ohh mannn! that means more money! :-p

the image shows that its been lowered 40mm on fk suspension kit, it catching every bump i hit on the road. i've got a set of eibachs from when my bro had a golf mk3 gti 8v, they did a lowering of 30mm. the effect was the same....money down the drain!!

are there any standard length but stiffer springs? or is it gunna have to be the worse scenario where i have to get rid of the rims? :-(

as said its gonna be a combination of the rims width and ofset and the rear arches and inner arches, a lot of vw`s catch on the rear of the sill are if you go to low due to the way the rear beam absorbs the bumps, the next best route is to try and resolve it is either really strong springs with gas adjustable rear shocks like konis or get some fk or simmilar coilovers, i wouldnt get rid of the rims the car looks awesome in that pic, check under the arch/on the tyre to see where contact is being made, it migth be only minor, it sounds horendous in the car but sometimes isnt

to say i bought the car like this with these modifications, i have to agree about the rims. i'm luvin em.

i think i have fk gas adjustable shockers coz the mechanic said they were adjustable and are at the highest setting at mo.

can you just buy the rear set of coilovers or adjustable rear shocks? i thought they always come in sets of 4.

i gotta admit that it does sound pretty nasty, like the rear end was just towed along the floor.

if its hitting the bumper or arch then it vibrates through the car!!! you can get sjocks in pairs, coilovers do normally come as a set of 4 but you can find people selling pairs on, the only other thing you can do is.....................TELL YA MATES TO WALK!! ;) if it dont rub when no ones in the rear? then thats the best bet untill you sort it out

Praise the lowered or what ey!

My bro also discovered that the arches maybe the problem. looking through various mags, he found that most golfs n ventos with wide wheels have cut back arches. unsure if you guys know about this? on some there is a 10 -20 mm flat edge after the curved part of the arches, others end at the point the curve stops.

so i'm thinking that the way whoever did these arches have done them too close, thus scrapping on that flat edge. i'm thinkin maybe cut the flat edge off on the arches.

does anyone know why some cars have that flat edge and some not? is it a modification to allow clearance for bigger/wider rims?

that flat edge is where it has been 'rolled' to accomodate wide wheels and avoid the problems you're having... downside is that on the rear the arches are double skinned so you cant just cut them you have to have them professionally flattened back with a hammer and dolly and then the rear quarters painted

i checked out the arches just this morn and found i was correct, i didn't have a clue what i was lookin at.

this is what the arches look like from the under side.

i wasn't sure but in the first image, does that show that the arches have been cut before new ones were added?

this is where the wear is happening on the tyre. http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j273/manzi_2006/Image038.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j273/manzi_2006/Image039.jpg

after thinking about long and hard again, i now think my rubber is too thick, as the wheels are wrapped with 215/40/16.

what is the common size of tire for phat wheels on the rear? i was thinking a smaller tire will give me the clearance i need for those edges that are scapping.

nah, its got adjustable dampers. i bought it like that. i was thinking of putting a smaller profile tire on it just to give the tires that angle.

at mo i'm thinking of gettin some 7.5 borbet A's coz at mo i can't put anythin in the boot and no rear passengers.

btw for those who thought this was a new thread - sorry :-p i just renamed the topic to MAYBE help others in their searches. :)

Fit/use a pair of original length BUMP stops .

I used two sets of bump stops !

since you have brought this thread back to life, i've never really looked back at how cool it looks lowered that much.

you think it will sort it? i was moments away from gettin another set of spring adjusters. at mo i have installed one set and has helped a little but still not really good enough for 2 people in the back seats.

Or you can just live with it. After all "You aint Dubbin' till you're scrubbin'" !

Police took my MOT away from me for scrubbin/ sidewall damage. They where 215/45/17s on the back, My front tyres where also at 1.6mm, Piss take as i was going to swap the lot for a set of 215/40/17 in the next few days. Lower profile would have sorted it but just saying watch out!!!!
