How long to remove/install engine?

Recommended Posts

Not removed a VR6 (yet) but ive removed countless other engines Fiat Uno,MGB GT, BMw 5 & 3 series, Saab 900 16v turbo(many times), Golf Gti Mk1 (many times), Mk2 gti

and lots of others...

Basically its the same with everything - wotk methodically and youll have it done in a morning easy..

Things to undo:-(common to all engines)

Fuel - supply and return,

Loom,

water pipes,

Exhaust (usually downpipe)

Gear linkage,

Driveshafts,

Subframe

If there's two of you one can work underneath and do all the stuff down there whilst the other works up top.

I have the luxury of my own hoist and this makes things easier - sometimes if you can get a mate to go in with you its cheaper to buy one in the long run - mine was about £180 and its paid for itself many times over 8o) .

Hiring one for a weekend which puts pressure on getting the job done is about £40 so you can see the logic of buying one - if you both use it twice its paid for...

Pete.

I have just had the motor out of mine about three weeks ago to replace a knackered chain guide, and that meant removing the gearbox as well to get to it.While it was out i replaced the head gasket and radiator. It took me about 4-5 days on and off not a solid 4-5 days ;) .And the engine hoist cost 30 quid for a week.So a basic engine swap could be done in a day i guess?,providing all goes smoothly :? (It never dose for me ~:( )
