urgent help - can i do the fault code thing on a golf ? paperclip test ? self dianostic trick ?

Recommended Posts

basically i didnt use my car yesturday and went out just now to use it and it wont tick over on its own ?

i can start it and leave my foot on the throttle and its fine but as i remove it it just drops and dies .

i know when ive had vauxhall you can stick a paperclip in the dianostic port and short it out , and then you count the flash codes on the engine management light and then look it up on a web page and it tells you what the faults are . can i do this on a glof ?

its a golf vr6 on a N reg ?

if you can , where is the dianostic plug located on a golf ? and has anyone got a link to find what the flash codes mean ??

thanks in advance !!

I don't think so no.

The diagnostic plug is located behind a panel just above the ashtry in the centre console.

Using a paperclip isn't normally to short out an OBDC unit, it's used to press a recessed microswitch. Shorting out an OBDC connector is likely to result in a dead ECU and a bill.

right i take it this software is quite expensive , i just looked on ebay abd found this ? cant even work out if you get vagcom with it or if they are just selling you the lead and a driver cd for the lead ?

if its just the lead then anyone know where i can get this "vagcom" thingy ?

heres the link - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/USB-Interface-VW-AUDI-SEAT-Vag-Com-Compatible-VAGcom_W0QQitemZ220158257641QQihZ012QQcategoryZ30921QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem

You can download the software from www.ross-tech.com for free. The leads on ebay will give you limited use on VAGCOM but will read faults but not clear them i beleive

Im pretty sure its the software that limits the use not the lead, you have to pay for the full blown copy of vag com,
