tandino 1
Mine was losing water up until a couple of weeks ago - it was coming out of the header/expansion tanks.A new radiator cap sorted that out as i think the pressure relief valve in the cap was faulty Can you se any signs of antifreeze staining under the bonnet pointing to a source of the leak ?! Pete.
bazz780 0
my car did the same, i found the water leak towards the front of the lump, in the housing where the thermostat sits in, this is a common fault either that or the water pump
VR6Steve 0
Have a look for signs of water staining and maybe leave it running whilst stationary and see if you can see a leak/puddle under the car.Failing that maybe take it in to have a cooling system pressure check? marco 0
Be careful if you've topped your car up with a lot of water recently - it's nearly time for the anti freeze !!!!!Well it is up here anyway in the north.
acf8181 0
there'll be a leak...sooner or later it'll suddenly dump the load of coolant and you'll have the water light start flashing at you. stop immediatly or it'll be bye bye head gasket.it could be anywhere, so far i've had mine leak from the thermostat housing, and the aux water pump (whihc came apart eventually). i've also known others have the heater matrix go, and one thats leaked from the straight plastic tube that runs along the front of the block.go to a garage and get a coolant pressure test done to find out where its coming from, as if you're only leaking slightly its quite hard to find where its coming from.vw's seem very prone to loosing their coolant, my girlie's polo just had it all pi** out cuase the thermostat went. i also find it very disconcerting that if you compare the thickness of the wall of the hoses on a vauxhall hose to a vw hose, then the vauxhall hose is about three times as thick...but yet cost pennies in comparison! 28v6r 0
Errrrmmm ...Can I have your "Glasses" please Acf? Her wheel is very slightly turned to the drivers side I think, hence that Illusion, otherewise I'll have some of what your drinking... How to scare a you or what Paula ?? anyways... have a close look around the drivers side of the engine bay, look at the fan belt in particular to see if its slightly wet, or further back on the chassis leg near the bulk head (same side) let me know what you see....Also look around the bay for crystals on any of the hoses ( dunno if you use the pink "stuff" or not for yor antifreeze, if so the crystals would be pink, if it's ordinary antifreeze the the crystals would be light blue) That may point to a leak, now do the usual checks for head gasket, i.e hard hoses/bubbling in coolant, "cheese" or "mayo" in't oil cap, condensation from the exhaust when the engine is at nornal running temp, incidentally where does the temp guage sit when running on your car???Come back to us (all is forgiven te..he! ) wit further info.. vwmadgirl 0
Ok 28v6r~ Had a good look at all the things u said, the temp guage stays on 90 and doesnt move at all, ran it and there was signs of liquid in the end of the exhaust untill it got well hot 100c, can see sort of wet patches, i have taken pics of them and posted it up as easier to show you it this way ....here they are ~The 1st two are underneath view.....And these 2 are from the top view......Anyone any ideas as to where its coming from cas its well hard to see... :? And when warm its really smells inside of burning water ...HELP !!!!!!!! [ Edited Sat Sep 11 2004, 07:15PM ]
tommy 0
Not sure but from passed experience loosing water asand a smell inside the car can be an indication of the heater matrix.(does the car steam up inside).....But that looks to me like its coming from the thermostat housing(or area) and poss. running down the side of the head then block....just had a look on mine...............its very hard to see up under there.........can you put your fingers up round it to see if its wet...[ Edited Sat Sep 11 2004, 09:57PM ]
acf8181 0
i reckon its coming from the additional water pump like mine was...be warned, it'll be the pump thats damaged most likely, and it will suddenly let go (though you may notice that it starts using water loads just before).get a mirror down there and see what you can see.if you can't be sure its leaking from anywhere by doing that...go to a local garage and get a coolant pressure test done. watch him do it, so you can be sure of where its coming from...be careful though, its very hard to see where exactly its coming from down there, even when doing the pressure test...cause theres so many hoses and stuff.[ Edited Sat Sep 11 2004, 11:11PM ]
28v6r 0
Seems like sound advice to me Acf... Try that Paula and see what happens, Is C&R Enterprises not near you or BRM Motorsport, both are reliable garages and have a strong reputation in the field, just a thought really....
