HELP!! Engine Cuts out Randomly then takes ages to start

Recommended Posts

R reg Highline totally standard apart from Magnex back box

the car has had a major service inc plugs oil etc

when running its like a bullet, solid and consistent never misses a beat, but over the past few days these are the symptons

1. the car will just cut out randomly, just the engine, lights everything else comes on etc

2. when trying to start it again it cranks over but doesnt fire up.

3. then after leaving it abit it does, but at the mo its not starting.

4. it has a cat 1 alarm and immobiliser built into hte phob, and its full closure. will get the make.

5. Started teh car after a couple of hours, i think its ok once it cools down, if that makes any sense?

6. only other thing wrong with it is the engine mounts need changing. can this affect anything?

Some one please help, where is the OBD port? and anyone know what this maybe.

all terminals on the battery are nice and tight, the lights all stay on! its just not starting, and then after around 15minutes it does. just the engine cuts out!!

Stu i noted you call it the CAM hall sender is this not different to the Crankshaft sensor which i am looking for and is listed here!

http://www.thephirm.co.uk/Pages/faq.html#mk3_mk3

ok so i think ive changed the wrong one! ive changed the CAM sensor and not the CRANK!

the error code i had was *** Engine Speed / Reference Sensor (G28) ***

Engine speed and crankshaft position are registered by a single sensor

located on the engine block.

The sensor reads a toothed wheel mounted on the crankshaft to read

engine speed.

The toothed wheel has a two-tooth gap which is used as the measuring

point for the crankshaft position.

can someone confirm the part number? is it 021 906 433 C

Hi c11rgd,

The Crankshaft sits right at the bottom of the engine and the sensor is also right at the bottom of the engine.

I had the EXACT same problem on my VR and the camshaft (different to the CRANKshaft) sensor is what was wrong with mine.

The CAMshaft sensor sits on the right hand side of the head, right at the top of the engine, held in by one allen key bolt.

You may have taken the coil pack off in order to take it out although some people manage without taking it off.

The error message is definately reading CRANKSHAFT sensor, ive looked on ETKA but for the life of me can not find the crankshaft sensor listed or shown on diagrams, I will look when I have more time though.

To make sure that the sensor has gone can you check the resistance across the sensor. The sensor should be white, and you need to measure across pin 1+2 and you should have a resistance between 480-1000 ohms with the plug disconnected, also check pins 1+3 and 2+3 there should be no continuity or open circuit between these pins. If any of these tests show any thing other than specified it will prove that the sensor is faulty.

I hope this helps rectify your problem with your vr, I'm sure you will find it soon

Also try checking these which can also affect starting of the engine when it's warm.

Electrical connections - engine/battery

Fuel pump non-return valve

Fuel pressure/delivery rate/fuel pressure regulator

Fuses/fuel pump relay/engine control relay/fuel pump

Condition of fuel/fuel filter

Injectors

Ignition system

Air filter

Air intake system/vacuum system - leaks

Evaporative emission (EVAP) canister purge valve

Mass air flow (MAF) sensor

Barometric pressure (BARO) sensor

Engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor

Engine management system - connections/wiring

Crankshaft position (CKP) sensor/camshaft position (CMP) sensor

Engine speed (RPM) sensor

Throttle position (TP) sensor

Engine compression

Exhaust system/catalytic converter

Engine control module

at this point the images i posted regarding the diagnosis originally were wiped clean. then when the car did cut out we checked it again and it was the CRANK sensor G28 only showing, as SAMSON mentioned i need the part number for this and not the one for the CAM.

not sure i think this one is called autodiagnose, a friend of mine is the specialist, there are a large variety ofmachines, even some from Snap on and Bosch any good trusted workshop should have this,

For all this did sort out the Problem! the car needed a new CRANKSHAFT SENSOR< all sorted now!
