bobda 0
Occasionally I browse the forum on my phone and the page sizes are huge - well in excess of 1Mb each, which will not only cause slow loading times, but eats into the server's bandwidth.I'm sure it could be changed, but I'm not a website wizard so I don't know how. Another forum I visit used to have a similar problem and it was something to do with the HTML having unnecessary coding. It's not just the forum pages either, the homepage at www.vr6oc.com pulls 1.22Mb of data on loading, which is a HUGE amount. VR6Pete 1,455
Hi. Im already aware that there are issues with the amount of data it downloads, we are planning a backend upgrade, and the theme is being re-worked to allow fluid resizing, this will fix the issues with larger size images, however our moderators resize image where appropriate.I'm an IPhone user, and I'm currently having the theme optimized for mobile browsing, I suspect it will just be a case of ensuring the images are optimized also.and yes, your right about the bandwidth, currently eating 40GB month +Watch this space
VR6Pete 1,455
I've now enabled "Output Using gzip" this should reduce the amount of data is downloaded, please let me know how big the page size is on the front page now.cheerspete

VR6Pete 1,455
I'm not convinced.I did some testing last night, disabled wifi / edge on my phone, so its just using GPRS and the page loaded in about 40 seconds, I presume you have a windows smart phone?I will have to dig a couple of my old ones out and do some more testing. You do realize your avatar is over 270kb on it's own? which wont help with loading speeds when browsing the forums... and I'm not sure if the website will attempt to cache the images / including your avatar...try changing ur avatar for a smaller / non animated one first... firefox is telling me the page sizes for the front page is 7.68 kB (7,863 bytes)Pete
VR6Pete 1,455
firefox doesnt take into consideration the js and css. just done some stuff and noticed the front page is downloading 534kb of data. will look into once backend has been upgraded.
bobda 0
I'm not convinced. Sorry' date=' not convinced of what? :S I did some testing last night, disabled wifi / edge on my phone, so its just using GPRS and the page loaded in about 40 seconds, I presume you have a windows smart phone? No, a Nokia S60 device (E65) which shows me how much data is being downloaded for a particular page. You do realize your avatar is over 270kb on it's own? which wont help with loading speeds when browsing the forums... and I'm not sure if the website will attempt to cache the images / including your avatar...try changing ur avatar for a smaller / non animated one first... I don't see how that is relevant? My avatar isn't on the homepage' date=' nor is it on the forum start page as mentioned above. I'll change it though, if you want? Maybe you could set an upper file limit on avatar sizes - quite a lot of forums have this in place to save bandwidth. I think 100KB should be adequate.firefox is telling me the page sizes for the front page is 7.68 kB (7,863 bytes)That's way out - the logo (http://www.vr6oc.com/e107_themes/VR6_Forum/images/logo.png) is 28kB for a start! VR6Pete 1,455
As I mentioned in the my following post, page size is different from what you belive it to be. the page sze is just the raw HTML and content generated from the DB. not taking into account .js / .css etc..As the site uses AJAX and other dynamic content, I cant gurantee it will work on any mobile device apart from the iPhone at present, due to limitations with the platform web browser, how ever, the amount of users using a mobile browser is a very small minority, according to google analytics, therefore has never been intended or designed around mobile users.Moderator edit by: Admin

bobda 0
As I mentioned in the my following post' date=' page size is different from what you belive it to be.[/quote']No, seriously - the browser on my mobile tells me exactly how much data it downloads for every page visited. As the site uses AJAX and other dynamic content' date=' I cant gurantee it will work on any mobile device apart from the iPhone at present, due to limitations with the platform web browser, how ever, the amount of users using a mobile browser is a very small minority, according to google analytics, therefore has never been intended or designed around mobile users.[/quote']It works fine on my phone (using two different browsers) but that's not the point I was getting at.I was trying to highlight the FACT that the pages pull a hell of a lot of data from the server every time a page is loaded. It doesn't bother me, I use wifi - I'm just thnking of your server costs.
VR6Pete 1,455
mate, I know already. no need to keep going on at what point your trying to prove, as i've already proved it.I was actually refering to firefox page size, not what your phone is telling you, owning a blackberry to, i know exactly what you are referring too. VR6Pete 1,455
Ok, made a few more changes, it should be smaller now, it does matter, as it means people browsing on mobile devices / slow connections dont get the best experience, slow page loads are not nice at the best of times, never mind on mobile devices, and also eats away at our bandwidth. We have 40GB / month, now I'm getting through nearly 1GB a day. which translastes to over 1MB per page, per user who visits the site, you can see why it matters.on a seperate note, ive fixed the new post page so it displays 50 entries instead. Forgot to change that after I upgraded the site.Cheers,Pete
