ric_vr6 0
Ok, my vr makes a ticking noise when i start the engine, its loudest at near the alternater side of the engine and its bugging me, its not very loud but its there! A friend said change the oil, it may be too thin etc. But before i do so i thought id ask you guys??Second thing is my oil, i took the oil cap off and noticed a very small amount of white stuff on it. The oil was very hot as id been thrashin her minutes before, but again im not sure this is right. (its looked like 2/3 drops of milk on the cap) And just to add, the oil was smoking when i took the cap off!!Thanks ric
Roan 0
The oil can take a minute of two to reach the hydraulic valve lifters, that's probably the noise you're hearing... If it doesn't pretty much go away then check it's not your timing chain guides - since your car looks like a OBD2 it may not be the chains unless it's been to the moon and back. The mayo in the oil cap is normal as is the smoking oil I would say - the VR6 is a very hot engine. I change my oil every 5000 miles to semi-syn and the engine's always quieter afterwards. ric_vr6 0
Thanks mate, thats made me feal a little better, il change the oil and have the chains looked at?What oil should i use?
Roan 0
VW Synta Silver is what most folk here use, I use the Fuchs stuff from GSF as it's cheaper and just as good I think. Check the site here for info on chain guide checking - there's an mp3 of what knackered chain guides sound like.

xyber 1
Ive just cleaned out a shed load of mayo from my oil catch can and filler cap, it really needs a good long run to get everything hot and dried out again after all the cold and damp weather
patpong_pete 0
mayo most people think its the Head casket thats gonebut the vr6 lump is a engine that needs a good run as it will sweat alot so oil change and clean the filler cap and give it a nice run on the motorway
craggsy 91
Also the standard oil cooler is a weak point and can mix water in with the oil
