Dr.Pepper 0
My VR wouldn't start properly this morning. It would start, but then die straight away.It does that occasionally but always starts the next time. Not this morning. As a consequence, I opened the bonnet to take a look.I fiddled a bit and noticed a split hose.Tried it again and it started.I suspect the two aren't related, but has anyone any idea why it might be dying straight after starting??Also, turns out I have to get the hose from VW.It's the one coming down from the expansion tank to a T-splitter.70 blimmin quid!!! !ill I feel like I've been well and truly bent over by Dick Turpin.Or at least I will do when VW finally get the part in and let me hand over my hard-earned cash to them. dubloke 4
why dont you ask on here if somebody has a hose like that left over from the samco group buy? i sent my hose, the same as you need, to acf, as his was no good either. just cost him postage as it was no use to me any more. acf8181 0
ignore the PM i sent you, i've just been thinkin....does your car have a t piece in the hose? cause i think i still have the remins of my old hose, i had to replace it cause the big tube had let go. but if you only need the small thin hose i may be able to cut it off. then you can attache it to your t-piece. Dr.Pepper 0
Ok. Duh!It's not the hose that's damaged.I've had a closer look and put it under some pressure. The thing that's actually leaking is right above that hose. The T-splitter goes up into something and it's the housing of that, that is leaking. Can anyone tell me what it is that the hose goes into?Ta! Dr.Pepper 0
The thing it goes into -there's another hose that comes out of the bottom of that and is covered in a metalshroud. It then goes into the back of the engine bay, presumably to the heater matrix....Thermostat maybe?Equivalent of the bypass valve to stop the heater matrix split problem that the Mark 2s had ??[ Edited Wed Sep 15 2004, 06:52PM ]
VR6Rob 0
The hose goes from the rad to thermostate housing and the smaller hose from the T goes to the expansion and the throttle body. The thermostate housing can leak and could cover the coil pack with water
Dr.Pepper 0
This thing is at the back of the engine, next to the coil pack.A hose comes out the bottom of it and goes into the car itself. I'm sure that's to the heater matrix. The other hose coming out of it goes to this T-split which is immediately beneath it.
VR6Rob 0
The hose that goes to the bottom of the expansion tank goes to the electric water pump next to the coil pack. They leak as well.

Dr.Pepper 0
Hmmm, that could be it then. Are they expensive do you know?
VR6Rob 0
Think about £90 from VW.Thats a mk4 in the pic may be diffrent.
acf8181 0
you need to take it off ans check its leaking from their, and not out of a hose thats ajoining it.if its the additional water pump thats leaking it'll probably just fall apart in your hands! mine did, after dumping all the coolant.what is it with vw's and their cooling systems, did they get an italian to design it? all the parts are so flimsy, the hoses are about one third of the thickness of a vauxhall hose!
