Hi, I've finally taken my vr for a good ol test drive(pounding isnt right, changed), its amazing! people just dont understand that you have a VR, they think its another golf...lol... %-6 .

I left my car for about 6 hours today outside, went out, checked the oil and saw it was very low, no leaks, no nothing, when i start the car it says in01, now this means a minor service right??

Also, when i got a bit heavy on the revs (4000RPM) in 1st just after pulling off (cold), the car instantly began to hesitate and became VERY VERY lumpy to the extent of being undrivable. This putt-putt stage lasted for about 20 seconds (and i almost poo'd my pants, becuase i have only had it 1 day!), then the car went back to normal.

I drove to the nearest garage in as higher gear as possible (low rpm) and topped her up, she runs okay now.

She is a 1995 N reg (late) vr6 highline and has covered 70590 Miles. Everything else is in perfect condition, I have been racing around this weekend alot (when i picked the car up on saturday morning, it was 70201 miles LOL).

Is it normal for the car to be a bit tempremental when its cold? (i.e doesnt like being revved hard).

I don't want to goto to the stealer (dealer) to get my codes read (how much?!). My car obviously needs an oil change (in01), there is a metal whirring noise (like a chain rubbing against something) coming from the car, but i havnt isolated it to the timing chain yet (please god, dont let it be the friggin timing chain).

On a seperate note, my vr6 is quite good from a standing start, but it seems like from >2800RPM it just goes BALLISTIC and decimates everything....is this 'turbo' feel normal when flooring the VR? or should this ballistic feeling happen throughout the rev range.

Regards!

!amazed !amazed -- my car is only 1 day old omg, i hope ive not ruined it already :(, when i picked her up, she was running very nicely (albiet i forgot to check the oil even after seeing the car 4 times :(...stupid...stupid)

I will look after it, if i could just get some help?

Its just that im addicted to the engine noise at 4000rpm, is this normal? does anyone else experience this?

I took the car out after my little putt putt stage, and it was fine after warming up.

should never run a car hard from cold whatever it is unless you dont give two shits about it and want to kill it! wait till the oil temp gets to 50 b4 giving the loud pedal some action! the vr does pick up really well from @ 3k and over as its quite tall geared to start with, the whirring noise from under the bonnet will more than likely be a slightly noisy auxilary water pump, not much to worry about unless you start losing water or it starts making a louder more pronounced noise!

Reving/thrashing your own personal car from cold is a recipe for disaster - car is on cold enrichment cycle therefore extra fuel on the bores coupled with hard reving will increase bore which will lead to low compression and an engine rebuild - you heard it here first.

Your stumbling when cold after thrashing it is because its on cold start - ie rich......

I recommend waiting till the oil is at least 65'C before taking the revs over 3000 and giving it any beans.

From cold i hardly touch the throttle for the first couple of miles slowly building up revs.

I suppose my mechanical sympathty stems from doing all my own work on cars .

Take it easy on her :o

yep....same for me, I NEVER NEVER drive my vr hard from cold or any car for that matter............it does it know good...............my last lube service (oil change) from vw cost me £80 quid using magnetic oil..........in the past ive had the service light come on early where by it was not reset at the last service......if this is the case, they will reset it for you for free!

i must admit, ive killed my car due to not waiting for her to warm up. now it runs like shite and i need a rebuild, so my advice is... take their advice, lol. do not drive the car hard till its warmed up, thats why it has the oil temp on the mfa. he he. im going to look after it once ive had it rebuilt, cos i now know the costs involved and dont want to be paying that every year.

wait till the oil temp gets to 70 (thats the one on the mfa, not the dial to the left of the display) before going for it.

not that i'm sure that caused the misfire...perhaps get the ecu fault codes checked. if it were an older car then we'd suggest cleaning the ISV (idle stabilation valve) but as yours is OBD2 it doesn't have one. OBD stands for on board diagnostics, upto M plate are OBD1, N plate on are OBD2 (has more electrical carp than obd1).

always check your oil level regularly on a vr6 as they do use a bit more than most cars.

yep, the car does lack grunt under 4000rpm, thats normal...but there are things you can do to cure that, gonna cost you though.

guys thankyou very much for the advice, and taking all of your comments into consideration, will treat the vr like the 8v when warming up (very very very very very carefully). Although my 8v give me a warning it's not liking things (the throttle retards slightly before getting slightly lumpy, never get too hard on the old 8v when she's cold). Like i said in my welcome post, i've really come to respect the vr6, i can see what all the fuss is about, and will be a bit more when it comes to her needs lol.

does anyone know what needs to be done when doing an IN01 service? I've changed oil, spark plugs, break fluid, water also stuck samco hoses on her this morning :).

Pictures to follow.

its hard to say what should be replaced without checking the service history of the vehicle. but what you've done is probably fine, maybe do the pollen filter as well.

one thing, be very very careful with your plug leads. only use the special tool (which should be clipped to the bonnet support) to remove them. they are quite fragile and will get damaged if you just tug them off. oh, and they cost £100 if you do trash them.

quick update, i used the plastic remover tool on the bonnet strut, the plugs came off easy.

I've just realized that im going to have to take the car to a garage to get the in01 counter reset. So i decided to just take it to a dealer and have a major service (everything) checked, quotes run around at £898 right now.....The nearest specialist said for major im looking at £300 so guess where its going :).

I didnt really trash the engine when i started her, rather than just taking her to higher RPM in first (instead of changing up). I've had to rebuild my mk2's head (skim it and everything!) so i know what you mean.

Its just there are so many electronic controllers on this car.

Also having old mk3 vr6 splitters put on (deeper), much nicer.

Just wondering why you're getting astronomical quotes for a service when you've already done all that.....

Maybe check/change the air filter too ?

Nerih, how old are you?! ?!

Did no one ever tell you that you never ever thrash a car from cold - unless its a company Ford Focus, 1.6 LX :P

Dont be a muppet. Take care of the bloody thing. Wait for the engine oil to warm up, like everyone has said... check the MFA for that. Personally anything after a temp of about 70 is safe and it will only take about 10 mins to warm it up properly.

By the way - you weren't taking the piss by stupidly pretending you rev your car from cold were you?!! ~:(

Age is not really a factor here, what is a factor is that my car misfired from cold when i put on a few revs, and when i say a few i mean slowly building up to 3000rpm in 1st. My local garage has told me that my fuel filter is clogged and one of my HT leads is damaged, I have since replaced them.

I also noticed this morning that when i was driving in 3rd, from low rpms i would feel a VERY SLIGHT misfire.

I'm glad the car's been checked out, and my mind is finally at ease.

No need to go biting my head off now chaps.

I'm not new to owning perfomance vehiclles, porche carrera 4s and jaguar XKR springs to mind - those of you who know Hiren from the Club GTI forums will no doubt have seen pictures of my old golf, and the two cars in question. I'm not trying to boast, just getting rid of this 'boy racer' impression my first post implied.

thanx everyone.

An obvious question but have you checked the plugs ?! - my car had a slight misfire under slight/low load when i first got it and this was down to worn electrodes on the plugs - try swapping them.

Also the Snap On tool for plug removal is wrth its weight in gold 8o)

Pete.
