Help please, CV JOINT... how do u get it out

Hello there, im tryin 2 change my passengers side cv joint, and ive tried knocking it thro, and still no luck, cant get the damn thing out. Any tips on how to get it out, thanks.... Matt

wheel side?? Undo the big nut (32mm i think) and just tap it out.. Think you have to drop the driveshaft off the gearbox side or undo the ball joint to have enuff room

yeh i havent got enuff room, how do u drop the driveshaft out. The nut was already off lol, it had snapped off man.. Or how / where do u undo the ball joint, so bloody messy lol. Cheers

Undo the bottom balljoint on the wishbone and split with a splitter. This will allow the hub assembly to move away from the driveshaft (After pushing it through), you should have enough space to remove the CV joint from here on in.

Well you could unbolt the balljoint from the wishbone at the bottom (If it's that type), but if you do it like that, mark it up very throughly as these have a bit of adjustment, and you could knock your camber out if you reassemble wrong.

Ive got a philips bolt under the wishbone, to undo it by the looks of it, so drop that, mark it on the thread, or sumin like that. Then will allow me to have room to take the cv joint out... Sounds gd, ill give it ago, thanks mate

There should be 3 bolts in a triangular formation that hold the balljoint to the wishbone. Using a scriber, or something similarly sharp, scribe a line on the balljoint where it protrudes from the wishbone, this will ensure that it's the correct distance in when refitting. Good luck.

Can you adjust castor off that ball joint plate? Or is there anyway of setting it up if you didn't scribe it..

Reason i ask is im doing the front half of my 5 stud convertion and its already in bits... Im getting my tracking and camber set up after im finished so aslong as i put them both in the same place (pushed in asfar as they can go) then i should be ok?? I don't need to set up the castor up??

Providing you're on flat ground and jack the car up evenly, you can set it up with a spirit level just to get you to a garage who can use alignment gauges.

Right i undone the 3 bolts underneath, and it werent budging at all. So i put them back, bastid to line the holes up again. .... confused sorry

turn the stearing wheel to make the track rod come out giving you more room.. If left side then full lock right. right side fully lock left.. and stop been a pussy and pull it

While your there try not to damage any off the rubbers on the ball joint or gater ect. Also have you got both wheels off the grown or just the one side jacked up.

If you only got the one side up the anit roll bar will be pushing the wishbone up and will make it harder to pull it out. Good luck

i have one side up, the left side. the rubber that goes around the cv joint, ive ripped off, hoping you get a new one with the new cv joint.. right ok ill turn the steering, lol didnt think of that.. report back inabit, lol thanks

Okay, ive undone the 3 bolts again, now i jus pull it away from the wishbone..? and then it should give me room to take the cv joint off... Thanks Lads

Sorry, I was answering your PM's, but yes just tap your CV splined shaft through the hub as you pull it away until it's free, then compress the retaining circlip holding the shaft side onto the driveshaft. Should be job job by then.

no need to compress the circlip on these. Just tap the cv joint off the shaft

Try not the pull the driveshaft out of the gearbox end while doing this

right okay, ive dropped the shaft now, i can see how the hell im going to get it back in, as i cant lift it, will i have to raise the other side? And i am tapping the cv join on the shaft, but its not buding?

Do you mean it's just hanging free? You don't mean removed it altogether?? Looks like you'll be trying to find that internal circlip to compress after all, once done should just tap off the shaft.

the driveshaft is hanging freely... away from the hub now. just cant see how im going to get it back in2 the wishbone, as its to stiff.... will i have to raise the other side, get it level..? I cant seem to get it off....

There isn't a special way to take it out. Unless mine and all the other mk3s ive worked on are different to everyone else's

You just tap it off the end......simple as that. Hold drive shaft and tap CV joint. There is a circlip but its 3" inside the CV joint.

It isn't the type which you use cir clip plyers to spread. theres no hole on it. More of a big spring loaded c clip

So just to tap it off...............
