Hi all, i know this has been done before and i am hoping if someone can point me to the post or give me some information please.

After just missing out on buying two VR6s i have decided to do a project car, well in my eyes anyway. I am purchasing a cabrio (i know) and will be dropping in a VR6 lump. Now i am not sure how straight forward this is but i have been told its a straight swap where the engine is concerned as long as the cabrio i have is also a Mk3. if this is not true please enlighten me.

In case my friend has got it all wrong what will i need to complete this conversion, i will be purchasing a salvaged VR6 that stills runs besides having no doors, windows, and the back nearly in the middle of the car. should i just take out everything, engine, gearbox, loom etc. And having no knowledge and time for doing this type of thing, what am i looking to be charged and is there anyone you can recommend to do the job. I live in London so the nearer the better.

Thanks

This conversion is very straight forward just use everything from the donor ; )

thats what i have been told, I done a conversion on my last car that was very straight forward as all mods where already done, i just had to drop the lump in and wire everything up. I am just hoping this will be the same.

  • 1 month later...

Hi its been a long time,

ok project update is as follows, i have finally got my cabrio which i have put a picture up of underneath, and should be picking my vr6 donor car up weekend which i am looking to strip clean.

In the interest of anyone, the leather interior has gone, but it has black and red GTI interior, and gti wheels, which i think are 15's.

I have a mechanic who is willing to fit his own vr6 engine as long as i supply a gearbox for £750, which sounds good to me, What do you think? my main concern now is everyone keeps telling me i have to do the conversion from 4 stud to 5 stud and the complete braking system, so i can stop :-d . if anyone can once again point me in the direction of a member on here who has done this conversion it would be nice to see. but i will call strictly dubs as i have a week off so gonna try and get as much done as possible, thanks in advance.

Yer you need all the brakes off your donour car.. It realy is as simple as remove rear axal. then swap for 5 stud vr6 axal... Bolt it up and plumb it into the brakes system, Also need to change handbrake cable

Remove front subframe and replace with vr6 subframe wishbones hubs brakes brake pipes ect ect. everythink from the donor

Them looms clocks fuel pump engine gearbox drive shafts exhaust system

Do you have hydrolic clutch in it at the moment? if not then your dashboard will have to come off to change the pedal box

Thanks i will give this a try, not sure how far i will get, and i am not sure about the clutch, I will have to ask the mechanic, i am a bit backwards when it comes to cars, but the other parts sound a little bit more straight forward, the dash thing sounds like a nightmare though. You sound like you have done one of these conversions before, thanks again.

Ive put 5 stud vr6 brakes on 2 mk3s and at the moment im half way though reshelling my VR6. Car im using to reshell is a L reg 4 stud 1.8

Im having to change the pedal box which is extra work... Not hard tho. Just take your time..

What engine is in your cab? If you pop the bonnit u will be able to see if theres a cable going to the top of your gearbox
