hi, i hope someone on here can help me, i purchased my vr6 about 6 weeks ago but over the last coupe of weeks i have had to keep topping up the water every 7-8 days.

there is no "milky" residue in either the oil or the water and also the tempreture never goes above half way.

i have noticed that when i am driving i can sometimes smell steam in the cockpit. and this morning i noticed some steam coming from under the bonnet, passengers side.

i really love this car it is a joy to drive and was wandering if anyone had any ideas on what it could be and if anyone knows of any good vw specialists near wigan. the car has done 110000 miles

be warned though i am a novice when it comes to engines (i dont even know where the head gasket is) so you will have to explain things in basic terms to me.

just out of interest if it is the head gasket thats gone how much am i lookin at to change ????

thanks in advance

wayne

I had a similar problem. I found a tiny pin hole in the water pipe that goes from the head to the water matrix through the firewall at the top of the engine. The hole was at the end of the pipe with a large bend in it near the engine head. It’s a common point of failure as it sits above the exhaust and perishes the pipe. The water falls straight on to the exhaust and causes you to see a lot of steam everywhere.

to be honest i havent got a clue where any of these things are you mention. i am a complete and utter novice when it comes to engines.i have looked again today and it does seem like there is a little pool of water at the back of the engine ???

ideally i would love for someone in the northwest area who knows what they are looking for to take a look for me
