Sorry to burst your bubble mate but there are currently 247 petitions on the Downing Street website relating to fuel (not including the rejected or closed ones). As far as I am aware, no e-petition has ever made it as far as being debated in the HOC.

It is worth pointing out that for every 1p reduction in fuel duty, the government will have to find £250million to make up for it somewhere else. We live in a capitalist society where we accept the effects of the free market as a necessary price of our relative freedom.

As a fellow VR6 driver, I share the feelings of motorists as much as anyone, but reducing fuel duty is neither a short term or long term solution to the current high fuel prices. It is up to OPEC to increase their supply, and in the long term, up to governments and the private sector to provide a sustainable alternative to oil.

Sorry, but I think its not about supply - its about how much the government makes per litre of fuel bought I think its about 64% per litre!

Yes there is becoming a shortage of oil as its comsumption is spiralling, but the amount that the oil companies actually make per litre is little compared to how much the government makes.

So if they freeze/ reduce the amount of tax they make then the price would fall - perhaps.

Sure, the oil sellers put the oil up but its the tax the government takes that cripples drivers.

As you say a 1p reduction would make a shortfall for the governments pockets - but do the road users see this money reinvested in the roads/ transport - no! It goes elsewhere like repairing their properties etc etc...

Sounds a bit political - but they already sting us for road tax, and the petrol tax is out of control - something should be done.

The tax/ duty on fuel is a way for the government to make money - fact! Maybe they should put income tax up 1p instead. Then the people who make more money would pay a little more - they have enough!

I'd rather pay a few extra pence per week in my wages than an extra few pence PER LITRE!

Just my opinions...

not to sure about income tax as the average person would fall into that bracket due to the goverments stupid tax banding system but i do agree that they should reduce the amount of money spent on wars nd refurbing houses. I also think that by scraping petrol tax for the emergency services would save millions on the nhs and police force! as for road tax i dont see how a 2001 v6 4 motion should have a 120% increase in a year due to the goverment needing to find money to attempt to stop this country goin down the pan.

Finally the oil companies yes sure they make huge profits every year but so do microsoft, wallmart, tesco's etc they are not hounded by the goverment and used as a scapegoat to why people are paying so much money for fuel. We buy petrol at the cheapest rate in europe nd then by the time brown the cunt has had his way that dramatically changes!!

Cant wait to get out of this country

I would say that the amount of road tax has actually fallen in real terms since 1999, but of course VAT receipts have increased since the price of petrol has risen. But, that's not the government's fault... The oil producers are not the ones putting the price of oil up directly, that's down to simple supply and demand economics and to a smaller extent the speculators on the international money markets. But, OPEC can and should increase supply, even if it's just to root out the speculators. I agree that road users are paying all this tax but see little or no investment in the road network, or even public transport. Putting income tax up would only penalise those who maybe don't have a car so politically it would be suicide.

At the end of the day, cutting the amount of money the government SPENDS is the priority - getting the lazy, benefit-dependent social underclass off their backsides and into work should be what the government is doing, not taxing those who actually have a job!

As someone who follows economics reasonably closely, I would say that the current prices are unsustainable, purely becasuse of how fast they have risen. Prices will maybe not come down much, but they definitely will not rise for a good while. Still doesn't make it any easier owning a VR tho!

I believe its also to do with the fact that oil is priced in dollars and the dollar is suffering at the moment.
