Renson 0
Ok so this week i rescued a VR6 from a horrible scrapyard death, Bodywork isn't too bad, engine idle perfectly and the car has nearly a complete service histoey. On the way home is when i notice problems. It seemed to have no power and was slower than my 16V Corrado. It seems really restricetd and won't rev over 4k. There seems to be a really nasty rattle from the Catalytic converter, but even if this was broken and blocking the exhaust gases would this cause such a massive power loss. The engine dosen't seem to be mis firing. Could the Air flow sensor be at fault. Help Please>
rigs 0
Blocked up exhaust would cause the symptoms you describe... i.e. perfect idle, unwillingness to rev and lack of power but otherwise smooth running.
Renson 0
Thank you, i may take the cat off and gut it tonight then just to test it. Will this cause anyproblems with backpressure in the exhaust or will it be the same as fitting a bypass pipe?
jaysVR6 2
More than likely be the MAF. I very much doubt the exhaust will be blocked enough to restrict RPMs like that. If it was that bad, you'd hardly get any gases coming out from the tailpipes.
Renson 0
Ok, bit more info, popped home at lunchtime and disconnected the maf, that made it 100x worse. Car wouldn't idle, tried to sort itself out a couple of times then died, reconnected and it idled perfectly. Decided to clean it out and that has really made no difference. took it for a quick blast and noticed that as i got to about 4-4.500 rpm the power would totally disappear and the cat would wake a dreadful rattle. Really does seem like that cat to me. Am still going to plug the diagnostic machine in after work to check out if anything else is happening though.
xyber 1
you need to reset the ecu now aswel as you disconnected the MAFsound like your CAT has collapsed and is bloking the exhaust
Renson 0
reset the ecu? take it i have to disconnect the battery and then when i re-attach it the car will learn itself again or do i do it with a scantool which i can do tonight if i do. Cat is comming off tonight and i have just got hold of some sort of 3ft harpoon like spear to kill it later. Finger crossed.....
