Timah89 1
I've got a 95 mk3VR6, recently started to get a strange rattling noise from the engine, close inspection shows it is coming from the alternator/tnsioner area. My bro reckons it might be a nackered bearing in the tensioner, i don't have a clue, pretty new the the VR engine.Would anyone know what this is, how simple to fix and how muich to fix?If you need any more details please let me know.thanks,
shail 0
If it is the bearing in the tensioner, then a new tensioner will be about £40. If it is the tensioner, and the bearing seizes you'll need a new belt too for about £20. Easy job to to DIY.
Phat VR6 3
take the belt off and check for play on all the pullys/ spin them up. which ever sounds ruff is normaly the one
Timah89 1
cheers peeps, i will have a check over the weekend, the noise is just getting worse.
Timah89 1
right bought a new tensioner today and just fitted it, then realised that is the water pump cog that is broken and making the noise, which is also what broke the tensioner, then when the tensioner was broken it gave the water pump even more play, hence why the noise has become so so bad! Can someone please let me know how much it is to replace, and how easy. it looks like you need to jack the engine up to gain proper access to it. Not looking good!
Phat VR6 3
you do have to jack the engine up/ undo the engine mount bolts but apart from that you just undo the 3 bolts, pull it out and change itpumps only around £50 so dont give up its not that bad. might be a day of messing about with it but it not the end of the world
Timah89 1
is it the rear mount as well as the front mount, if so how do you access the rear mount?
Timah89 1
Really need to know if i need to remove the rear mount to do this job. Also, part no for non-aircon belt - this one has7K1290 on it and its made by ROULUNDS ROFAN
frannybigballs 0
just the rear mount. take off the crap gaurd underneath the pulley, wheel off first mind! undo the rear mount, take the pulley off the pump while the belt is still on, belt off after loosening tensioner, and slowly lower car/raise engine til you can see the bolts. then remove and replace. should take about an hour
Timah89 1
Perfect, looks like i'll be doing that on Thursday. Can anyone confirm that the number i put on a previous post would be the part number?thanks,
frannybigballs 0
best bet is just order it from GSF, they stock the metal pump rather than the plastic one (impellor), for the same price
