Hi,

Hopefully not going to be a repeat of my last VR6 problems.

Just picked up my 1996 Highline with 113K miles on the clock, noticed that the oil temp took ages to register and then just kept climbing as far as 110! Now on my old 16v and 8v mk3 this never rose above around 90 on the oil temp as well as the coolant temp.

Anyway covered around 30miles and the car once stopped ran the fan for around 15mins before it cut off.

The car has been sat idle for months and has only done 300 miles since March. Its not been serviced in ages either so is it likly just needing a oil change?? When i took off the engine oil cap there is the white milky look to it, but in the coolant expansion tank there is no sign of oil. Also noticed that the coolant gauge seemed to just creep past the 90 mark ever so slightly. Not knowing what oil has been used previously should i just opt for fully synthetic?

Whats the thoughts is this worse ie head gone?? Car seems to pull fine althought there is a slight hesitation on throttle! Could it be oil cooler? Where do i look to check if its the cylinder head gasket? Any ideas why the fan would run on so long?

Any thoughts much appretiated

Nope thats just a VR6, full of character hahaha

Thay do take on water from moister in the air, esecially over the winter on quick commute drives, that shows as mayo in the oil filler, a decent drive will evap it all away, coolant needle sits dead centre or near enough, oil temp does take a while to heat up and that temp looks a little high but not crazy, the fans run on along with the aux water pump to keep the cooling going after the engine has stopped

new oil filter and VW synta silver oil will sort you

Low temp coolant thermostat from awesome GTI is worth doing aswell

nowt to worry about there, they really dont like old oil so keep onto of that and the hesitating is more than likly just old plugs and leads, which they are also picky about, at worst maybe the coil pack but plugs and leads would be my first bet

Just a full service and check the MAF and throttle body are in good order :)

Hi All,

Well today i did an engine flush and changed the oil and filter to Synta Silver and then took the car for a run.

Still the car oil temp creeps up went as far as 114 degrees and at the same point the water or coolant temp gauge crept just short of 110 mark. Not good! I was not thrashing the car only sitting at between 60 and 70 for around 25miles, i had to let the car freewheel to get the coolant back to the 90 mark. I am sure the oil would have kept going up at no point did it come down other than if i slowed down to a crawl when stuck behind a lorry!

I am now starting to wonder if its the oil cooler anyone got any ideas?? At present i cant really use the car as its not good to go this high in temp.

Please anyone got any ideas what to try next??

I have ordered a new low temp thermostat from awsome but i dont think that will solve the issue, looks like the current thermostat is operating correctly. Also i am sure that the oil pump is ok as when i did the oil i only primed the filter a little and after running the car for a few minutes and checking again it took an additional 0.75ltr to get to the top mark after leaving it for a while to settle. So this indicates that the pump is ok. Also there is no oil pressure warning coming on.

Any thoughts much appreciated.
